Everyone keeps score, some just stop counting sooner than others. I'd love to know what goes through the minds of the fun group when they birdie the first hole.

 ;D

By 'score" I assume either stroke play or playing a match
If not doing either, I find it really hard to see the point of strategy.
Other than on course practice, which is simply preparation for....keeping score :o

I only realize the number at the end of a round...and it doesn't affect my day like it did years ago

Years back when I sported a 4 cap it surely did.  I've been through a 25 years period where it didn't.  Suddenly it does as on the recent 22nd Other Senior Tour I carded triple-digits on three of the four rounds.  On the fourth I suddenly played the last 8 holes in 3-over for a decent 91.  I thought dropping 40 lbs. would help my game.  It hasn't.  I simply can't hit the ball, period.  I have the equivalent of the yips through the entire bag.  I am an embarrassment.  Golf requires and indeed deserves more commitment from me and a minimum level of competence, or otherwise it isn't really golf at all.

Score matters because it has exposed me and is forcing me to make a critical decision.  And Barney, I'd give myself a solid B+ on composure while making more triples in four days than you have in the past five years.  No grumbling, no profanity and one near club toss overcome at the last second.

Bogey - we need to play together.  I have had a few rounds in the last couple of years where I have kept score by net golf balls.

Just to be clear I play a game of birdie ball parlay and Stableford that has very little to do with a total number of strokes at the end of a round. I know exactly how much I won or lost but rarely know what I shot until I post my score later in the day or week.

Playing a game that is 90% dependent on how many birdies and when you make them is liberating. You may only truly feel pressure on a putt five or six times a round. In a way it also lends itself to the group playing the correct set of tees.

In my 50+ years of playing I do not recall ever placing a bet on total strokes for the day. I honestly believe that it is an urban myth that anyone else does either.

 8)  JK, do you ever not bet on something while playing golf?

ps.  ... as fun player since 1961, when I birdie the first hole, I normally inquire... "Any questions?"
pss. ... 90+% of time play at WCC and my local access courses, 6.5 courses and another 2 down south of town...  play out only occasionally, other than MI in summer.

The first time I ever gave away my company was when I met people from this site for a game. Otherwise I bet every damn time. I have a friend that is an accountant and this year I offered to play with him for free on April 16th. He not only insisted on a bet he upped my offer of $1 a point to $5. We played nine point scratch against a former pro who I believe played in the Anderson Cup last week. I think he got 23 points out of a possible 162. It's just how we roll in fly over county.
