Is your score paramount when you play?
I suspect amongst the members of the discussion group it might be a far less percentage then the general golfing population.
How often do you play with no regard for score? For me it's both, I play a number of times during the year where score is paramount but many other times when it has much less or even no relevance.

Score is not as important than it was when I was younger. Periodically, I'll try to shoot my age. I am more interested in hitting the ball well, how many fairways and greens I hit

I never care about score playing by myself.  Only time I really keep score is when the rest of the group is.

Not at all.  My strongly preferred game is a $1 Nassau.

Isn't score important in match play, too - just on a hole-by-hole basis?

Golf is a game/sport and as such, a spectrum of outcomes seems kind of a necessary element of it.

Does any golfer ever hit a shot truly not caring AT ALL where the ball ends up? I'm not sure I believe it.

Not really.   I play golf as a recreational activity and try to have as much fun as possible.   Sure beats a day at the office!

The only score I care about is what the person I’m playing with made on the last hole. As one of our Congresswomen famously said: “it’s all about the Benjamins”.

I would argue that my score is important, but not paramount to me enjoying being out on the course. There are days in every golfer's lives where you hit the ball solid and put solid, but your score doesn't reflect it and other rounds where you know you are off, yet somehow manage to scramble well enough to post a decent number. That's part of why I love the game so much. It's completely unpredictable and how well you actually played may not necessarily be reflected in your score.

The less I care about the score and more about the experience of the course and playing partners, the more I enjoy my round.  I don't practice and play enough to expect a good round each time out.

We just finished up a tournament where on the last day we made a triple on our 10th hole. Rather than give up we rallied playing the last 8 holes 1 under. That's why we keep score, to measure ourselves in the face of adversity. You can't just assume you are a man of character. You have to prove it.

 8)  well, there's golf and there's tournament golf...

Score is important but not paramount in normal play.  I will usually not avoid a challenge, that's no fun, and who cares about a scorecard a day later?

I'm still happy this morning. How can you guys that don't keep score pass on the small victories that excellence provides?  At 59 years old I need ever victory no matter how small. Fun is and should be wasted on the youth. An old man having fun for funs sake is creepy. You want to make an old lady stuck at home happy. Tell her that you're going to kick some ass today and then bring her home the spoils of your efforts. Easy peasy.

Never knew you to be a vain man.  I do the opposite and remain amazed that my index is as low as it is- how can an avg. approaching 83 translate to a sub 6 index?

I know of very good players, + handicaps, who struggle in tournaments perhaps because they seldom grind on 3'-4' putts during normal play (and don't count their misses), and never include anything above a double in their score.  Paradoxically, I also know two or three who max out the ESC three or four times each round, but seldom miss a shot or a putt that counts.

As to the question, I always go out intent on breaking 80.

Of course it’s important when I’m playing a club medal. It’s not THE most important thing because I’d rather score poorly than not play the medal at all.

But part of the fun is trying to hold a score together.

All friendly matches, I’m more interested in hitting sweet shots.

JK- I've known you to be your own man.  I too consume way too many calories, but if the choice was not so damned hard and I had some discipline, I would look considerably different.

Being a member rather than paying a daily fee has likely been the main factor in allowing me to play for fun rather than for score. Daily grinding out score on the same courses day after day does not appeal. Playing different shots with a variety of clubs with only 8 in a bag give me more satisfaction. Fun shots surely add to playing by feel rather than mechanics. I am highly competitive so when opportunity its presents itself I am all in and winning is great fun also.

I don't get too hung up my "score". Today, I played with two older gents that didn't keep score, conceded every putt less that 4ft, and laughed and laughed,  and complemented every good shot the entire way.  My ego doesn't need feeding, and I'm not playing any tournaments.  I don't need a score card to tell me I'm playing well or playing poorly. It's obvious.

Everyone keeps score, some just stop counting sooner than others. I'd love to know what goes through the minds of the fun group when they birdie the first hole.
