I really enjoyed the time I spent at Ballyneal. There may not be a "regulars" feel since it is so far from a majority of the members. But it was obvious that those who spent a decent amount of time at the club/course know who the members were. Plus there were a wide variety of guest and it was a pretty great hang....nothing to do but golf.

Anyone who has played in the Cal Invitational will know what a great course and club they have there.

+1 to Cal Club. The member who got me on couldn’t play so I ended up catching a couple of guys. They were very welcoming. That had to run off after the round but took time to introduce me at the bar. The beer was excellent and inexpensive. Everyone was welcoming, the pro and assistant were awesome and that bar and locker rooms, 1 to each side, were my favorite ever.

Wow so tough.

Note they have to not only be a great venue but have some fun too. Oakmonts tough to beat in that the course is off the charts, the people are happy to have you there and the Hamburgers are off the hook. Place is fun, members are proud to show off their place and welcome those who visit. Note I've only been there twice so might not have the full monty!

Philly has a bunch of great clubs, thinking some that are under the radar might just be the best ones in that they tend to be more inclusionary and less political. The membership makes it special the golf course finishes the deal.

I would elect National Golf Links, the best course in the country.

Oakmont is too hard for me but the clubhouse is spectacular.

Olympic Club. Two courses. Spectacular practice course. Great clubhouse. History.

7000 members, 5 hour rounds on overcrowded Ocean Course, staff with head sets coordinating traffic.
But, hey, you can get your car washed there!

I have never been to Cal Club or Old Town, but look very much forward to the day I do.

For me, I think of relaxing places with great people, great setting, great course and a clubhouse that is "elegantly understated".  With that in mind, I think of:

Peachtree Golf Club
Honors Course

Here in Chicagoland, Olympia Fields is beyond special.  Two great golf courses and a national historic clubhouse, not to mention a great membership.

The best club/course combo is any place without members like Bill Charles and Nick Ribeiro.

7000 golf members? You must work for Trump or Fox News. Playing the Ocean Course? Are you too much of a wuss to challenge the Lake? LOL

We are lucky enough to enjoy a reciprocal arrangement with The Valley Club of Montecito.. Incredible location, spectacular views, best weather in the US, great course, with a membership who have been very welcoming every time I turn up there.

On the other hand I'm not sure I'm right wing enough to be a member.

Last time I played there one of my playing partners stated that Ronald Reagan was most likely a communist. For some reason, I felt compelled to inquire as why he believed that to be true.... "Well, he used to the president of the Screen Actors Guild, and that's just union in disguise..."

No one else in the foursome seemed to think this was at all strange.

Anthony,

Sadly that's not too far from the truth.  RR would be far far too moderate to get nominated in today's GOP.  The NRA alone would have him casted him out like a one-eyed leper given his viewpoints on guns, Throw in his Anti-Russia rhetoric and Hollywood/Celebrity origins and connections.... and he would have never got off the ground.

But you bring up an interesting topic, how important is the prevailing club culture in ones decision before signing the checks?
