Casey Stengel was asked how he could explain his success with the Yankees (7 world series championships between 1949 and 1958). He said, "I never play a game without my man." That man was Yogi. I lived in New York City from 1950-1958. It was a great time to be a New Yorker and a Yankee fan.

If you can, track down a book called
Reynolds, Raschi and Lopat
. It is about those 3 guys who anchored the pitching staff that won 5 World Series in a row (1949-50-51-52-53). The success of those teams was really due to the strength of their pitching, not their hitting.

Looks like a good read. I'll have to order it. I was only two in 1949 so don't remember them very well but do remember their good play. The Yanks did average about 5 1/2 a game too, so they did get runs to back up their good pitching.
