Llanerch CC and The Birth of PGA Stroke Play
« on: May 17, 2019, 08:38:48 AM »
Having recently played Llanerch CC, it is quite interesting to trace the host courses for the PGA since that 1958 championship that marked the advent of stroke play in the tournament.  Llanerch is a terrific and sporty course on an amazingly small footprint, which is world's removed from current PGA venues.  The courses that hosted the balance of the 1960's PGA's included Minneapolis GC, Columbus CC, Laurel Valley and Dallas Athletic Club with iconic winners such as Finsterwald, Rosburg, Hebert ( Jay ), Marr, Nichols and Geiberger.  Take me back.

I love Llanerch and the course that hosted the PGA the year before (Miami Valley in Dayton, OH) has a very similar vibe and feel.

Welcome aboard, George.

Big fan of Llanerch as well.  Nice and cozy, with a good set of par 3s.  Photo album from a November 2016 visit:

I too am a fan of Llanerch, but Joe's slide show makes me sad.

I just drove past the course recently and this is crazy:

This is Arble 101 stuff. STOP putting your beautiful bunkers off in the rough! It's a Findley course.  ???

One never gets the sense the bunkering is disconnected, though.

It really has been years and years since I played there, so I will trust the No-Rough-Super !!

I really enjoy Llanerch.  One of my favorite courses by Findlay.  The par 3 Fourth is really good and one of those holes I could hit tee shot after tee shot and watch all the different ways the ball moves after it lands.  There are a few holes like that.  A great walk as well.
