Does Anyone Want to Design a Course in Rwanda?
« on: May 03, 2019, 02:44:31 PM »
I made a presentation today to a bunch of golf course superintendents and other golf industry people today in Nairobi, and one of the guys who was in the room is in the middle of developing a golf course in Rwanda.  It is the second course in the country and they want to renovate the original nine and build another nine -- right away!

I spoke to him for maybe half an hour and think his heart is in the right place, but I have a lot of other places to be right now, and Rwanda isn't one of them. So this is a good opportunity for someone who has the talent and the guts to take on a job in a very unusual place.

I thought it would be fun to put this out in the forum and see how many hits I get.  I will wait a week and then put the best candidate in touch with the potential client.  Don't bother unless you are ready to go very soon, as they are in a big hurry for reasons I will explain to the best candidate.

The president of Rwanda was in Oakland a few nights ago to watch the Warriors play Houston. He's a big sports fan believing sports can unite people.

Was scheduled to go to Rawanda as part of a charity stop from Tanzania 3 years ago and our prop plane had a mechanical issue on the ground before takeoff so we had to cancel. Very surprised they are thinking of golf, but can't hurt if the money is private. Would love to see a course built at Zanzibar, they have one course only I believe but a really beautiful island.

Was one guy instantly eliminated, for an inability to follow instructions? Tom did not say "post publicly" on GCA. He said "sitemail" or "email."

Not everyone who posts on here is necessarily a native speaker of English or familiar with our American dialect :).

Best of luck to anyone who gets involved, I hope that person can keep us updated.

George,

as someone with English as my mother tongue it is embarrassing how often I misread posts on here so I am impressed with many of those who post here in a language that is not their first.

George, I'm a native speaker of English, and often an a$$. I appreciate you pointing out what my post missed. I wish everyone the best.

For those who have asked, I've had 9 or 10 inquiries about the job via email, including three from designers whose names were unfamiliar to me.

I am waiting for a response from the client as to how he would like me to help:  whether he wants a single recommendation, or wants to talk to the 2-3 best candidates.  However, due to logistics, I will not help if he wants to turn it into a design competition that costs the candidates money and/or time.

A further complication is that I was traveling with another designer, who said he would pass on the job, but now seems to have some interest in helping . . . obviously, I can't step on his toes since he has already put himself out there by traveling to Africa as I did.

I will be in touch with those who have expressed an interest, as a group email.
