Oh Yeah... This Masters is Just Horrible for Golf...
« on: April 11, 2019, 02:18:08 PM »
Yeah doesn't this just suck to high heaven... where are the goddamn commericals... the banal BizHub swing tips...the you da man shouts and the boozed up shitheads yelling out...?!!

I may give up the game, this sucks so much.

Edit:  Jeez the forum software is horrible.  I've edited this post a few times to get the below to format correctly, and no luck.  A humble suggestion to upgrade the board software please.

The only thing that was bad for golf was Koepka's cap today:

If I see these at local courses over the next few weeks, then I will agree with that other thread.

Worth a read - https://feedtheball.com/2019/04/11/whats-wrong-with-augusta/
Atb

amazingly, the hole that rarely gets mentioned is the bowling ally 18th(especially for shorter hitters who have to be left to get around the corner on the second shot. All the bushes and unlimbed holly trees etc(screening for concessions presumably) made sense when that area was 170 yards from the tee. The right side is not any better for recovery with trees all unlimbed.
Can easily lose a ball left and or have an unplayable, but mainly the area left absolutely is unlike any part of the golf course. It was never "cleaned up" when the tee was put further 60 yards further back.
Just makes for boring un Augustalike recovery at best, as well as overly congested for patrons

I don’t think anyone who participates on a narrow golf architecture “chat sight” could ever dispute that the Masters does not make for excellent televised entertainment. Especially yesterday.

But if the poster seeks to make the leap from “OMG, people,  that was so-much-fun” to “of course, the Masters is good for the game” may need to apply the same objective qualifications that were apparently demanded of the poor sap who dared to ask a simple question in the other thread... ;D

Otherwise, what you may be guilty of is “CESS”. - or Chronic Empty Suit Syndrome.... ;D

I think the other thread did, In Fact, conclude that the Masters, like the Super Bowl, is great for business and certainly for ANGC and it’s members. But, at no level AT ALL did ANYONE offer one iota of DATA that the annual private event drives sustained benefit to the game...like Tiger Woods does, as an aexample.

Extrapolating from these two threads, I find myself wondering:

If no one had ever publicly criticized a specific golf course or brand/type of golf course architecture -- if CBM hadn't proclaimed that everyone in America up to then had gotten it all wrong; if the smart Cambridge-Oxford set hadn't put their pens to paper in the early 1900s; if Behr and Thomas and Mackenzie weren't so verbose; if RTJ hadn't tried so hard to sell himself/his ideas to the USGA; if Tom D hadn't written the CG, and Ran hadn't dismissed 40 years of gca as the Dark Ages; and if we all here hadn't spent 2 decades and a trillion words kvetching about all that was/is wrong with golf course architecture -- would things today be any different? Any worse, or better? With more good courses and more variety, or less?

Ignoring the good/bad silliness, and instead looking at the day, I’d say that Koepka has joined the rare modern group of Woods, McIlroy and maybe DJ as golfers who, when playing in top form, just make the game look easy, far easier than it is, even for them. The rare mishit is usually not bad, and the rest just looks ho-hum, fairways and greens, pars and birdies.

Naturally, I’m rooting for Tony Finau to join this group and climb this leaderboard (and more in the future), but for now I’m marveling at Brooks.

yikes that is quite a leap.

Running the premier in all of sports that the ENTIRE golf world will be glued to  is"not good" for its host sport....
promoting a junior event in prime time, an Asian Amateur, a South American Amateur, and now a woman's event in prime time..
is somehow "not good" for golf.
Ortiz had about 100 Mexican fans in his party yesterday wildly cheering his every shot-a week ago a Mexican amateur woman had us all glued to the set for hours, and talking about it for days afterwards.
Do you think any women or Latin Americans will have less interest in golf now?

I guess if you need data I could send you the hundreds of pages of daily show notes(usually fits on one-two pages) I got from SiriusXM and Golf Channel.
I can certainly give you data about all the droves of knuckleheads who took up golf when Tiger made it cool who then quit because golf isn't cool, but like anything worth pursuing, requires passion and some semblance od dedicaation to unlock itss joys-- and ultimately rewarding for those who persist and don't drmand instant gratification.

I have 46 years of anecdotal data of watching the "Augusta effect" of people being inspired to take up and continue golf.

hmmmmmmm,,,,,

One could pose perhaps pose a theory that The MASTERS is less than ideal for ARCHITECTURE in some ways (and it would be a commentable albeit tired thread)

I am very skeptical about the words "good for the game".  It seems to me folks say it as if thats all that needs to be said to prove their point. Often times its about the business of golf which is really on the table.  I don't know follow golf "business" to know if The Masters, Tiger Woods etc is good for business.  Truth is, I don't care.  I am far more interested in what is good for golf as a game.  I confess, I don't know if there is any such thing as "good for the game" other than playing the game because the game is personal.  What is good for one guy may have zero resonance with another.  Its probably best to simply treat golf tournaments as entertainment.  If you like it, buy it.  Does there need to be a compulsion to somehow make one's entertainment somehow more important than what it is?  Why can't entertainment be the end goal?  Why do golf tournamants need to be entertaining AND something else?

could be either, but I think we can agree the POTUS is horrible for golf, so why give the otehr the pass?

How exactly do you expect anyone to produce said data for either case, good or bad? TV ratings? Golf industry play rates? $$$?

I don't expect anyone to do anything. Why would I?
It was a learning experience where opinion and emotion was put forth by many. I respect that and will just leave it there.

But, in literally 3 minutes of "Googling", one can read a ton of info.

President Trump is horrible for golf?  Not sure I understand that one in that he is a developer and owner of more than a few well done golf properties.

Is it somehow his behavior on the golf course ?

I guess I can understand for some but would offer that I was more bothered by President Clinton and his cronies driving around the course in carts with their cigars and wide brimmed hats and shorts and double wide wristbands talking about "pu**y".

Funny what bothers people but then again Trump has more than a few members of his clubs and patrons of his resorts including President Clinton.

Are members of his clubs somehow condoning his golf course or even his political behavior?   What does it say about these people that they continue to support this man?

I didn't want to start yet another OT Masters thread...

But something occurred to me yesterday as I was watching the TV coverage.

If the "patrons" are such fine upstanding citizens and so well behaved, and the venue is a proverbial Happy Gilmore Happy Place, why is there such a massive police/security presence at the event?  Seemed there was two agents following every group and countless more beyond the ropes.

You go to a Eagles Football game, hey I get it....but the Masters where allegedly everyone is polite/nice to each other and peeps don't get out of line?

Yet another Masters Myth?

1,000% agree...POTUS is horrible for golf?  On what metric?  He has developed multiple high quality courses and renovated / upgraded several others.  On what basis is he 'horrible for gold?'

Kalen those Eagles fans have access to stubhub too...:)
They reform, and patrons are politely informed of the proper decorum should they consider straying.
The main difference is patrons at Augusta are held to a higher standard, unlike most every other sporting event.
Pretty simple really.
