Dixie Cup 2019 will now be played August 16-18 (revised dates) at Royal New Kent, Stonehouse Golf Club and The Club at Viniterra.

Royal New Kent had their grand reopening in April after a massive renovation to return the golf course to Mike Strantz’ original design presentation.

Stonehouse, also under new ownership, was purchased in December 2018 by J. Sanders Construction with plans to return the course to its former glory. Stonehouse is due to re-open July 2019.

The Club at Viniterra was designed by Rees Jones and is located 20 miles east of downtown Richmond in New Kent. The golf course, which is #8 on GolfWeek's Best You Can Play in Virginia list, is located adjacent to the award-winning New Kent Winery.

ACCOMMODATIONS:  We are working on a group rate at one of the hotels near the Richmond airport and will pass that info along soon.

There will be a get-together on Friday evening at Stonehouse and a dinner on Saturday evening at Royal New Kent, each featuring a presentation from the respective new owners... including an opportunity for everyone to discuss the changes and improvements to the course.

SCHEDULE

•  Friday, Aug 16: Golf at Stonehouse Golf Club followed by a cookout with Q&A presentation by the new owner!

•  Saturday, Aug 17:
36 holes at Royal New Kent (4-ball games followed by 18 hole scramble). Dinner at RNK with before/after presentation by Barton and Noel Tuck of Wingfield Properties, the new owners.

•  Sunday, Aug 18:
Golf at Viniterra. 4-ball matches.

COST = $255  Includes: four rounds of golf (with carts if you choose) plus dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings.

From GeoffShackelford.com:

Strantz's Royal New Kent Coming Back In April 2019

Screen Shot 2018-08-25 at 10.55.26 PM.png

There has been no shortage of depressing stories of golf courses lost for not entirely great reasons, and the loss of one of Mike Strantz's nine designs has filled up my email box.

While I haven't played it, I'm nonetheless pleased to read Erik Matuszewski's Forbes.com item on the impending resurrection of Strantz's work in Virginia, with help from the Strantz family and the courses original shapers.

Before its closure, conditions at Royal New Kent had deteriorated significantly. But a new ownership group led by Wingfield Golf Management Services is faithfully restoring Strantz’s work, which in 1996 was selected by Golf Digest as the country’s best new course. So not only did they save it from going to seed or being plowed under for housing, they're preserving one of Strantz's visions the right way.

I am not sure about the white sand in the bunkers but I guess that is what was available.

They did 20 years ago. I'm not so sure that is true anymore.

The 16th is our anniversary, so I regret my non- attendance. One of the few days in the year where golf is not possible.

Sorry, Carl. We had to move the dates due to the aeration schedule at the courses. Maybe you can make the 17th and 18th. I hope so. Let me know via email if that is an option and I’ll work it out for you.

I have just taken a work assignment in Virginia Beach, likely through the summer. If I'm still in Virginia in August, I'm definitely IN!

Thanks for the bump, Pete, but we have pulled the plug on this event.

We will try to schedule a Dixie Cup again down the road.

Whit,

Two suggestions:

1) Maine in late September 2020:

2) Pensacola in late October 2020 - Bill McBride's Pensacola CC being the featured course.  :)
