I'm very sorry to admit that I'm not seeking new courses to play.  I'm not exactly sure why.  I enjoyed the journey of seeking out the best courses on the planet. Every time some top this or that comes up, I find I've played a modest 15% of the courses.  My reasoning is that if that isn't enough to know what's good, I never will.  Another thing is at 70 years old I can't play good courses like I used to, and that wasn't very well.  Finally, I don't really believe there is such a thing as a bad golf course with the right mates.  So my golf these days focuses on the mates, not the course.  Enjoy the journey.  I did and am glad I did.  But, at the end of the day, it's not worth bragging about and there are more important things to be learned.  Just my humble opinion of worthless value.

I hope to see some courses in central PA (like the Penn State courses).

I'm planning a trip in early-to-late July.

Having a child in May so I probably wont be golfing nearly as much this year but am hoping to knock out the following:

1. Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes & The Sandbox

2.  Erin Hills

3.  Whistling Straits & Blackwolf Run & possibly the Meadow Valley and Irish courses if I can talk my wife into it :)

4. French Lick - Pete Dye Course

5. The Loop - Black Course

Really excited about all of them but especially Sand Valley.....cant wait to see what that resort is all about :)

I'm majorly front-loading my year because work will not allow me to travel from May to October. So far this year I've played 68 new courses with the goal of being at 110 by May. Normally I would spread that out through the entire year but that's not possible this year.

Holy shishkabobs!  I don't think anyone is approaching that thus far.  Where are you living or playing all those courses? In the south somewhere I would think.

Agree!  I don't have 100 courses inside of 100 miles that are new to me!  Bravo Cory!

Mostly trips to warmer climates as I'm running out of courses within 100 miles of Charlotte:
Texas-16
Atlanta-6
Florida-9
Alabama-11
Hilton Head-6
Again I normally don't do this but since playing is a priority for me and I know I will not be able to play new courses from May to October I decided to get very aggressive in the first 4 months this year.

What 6 courses did you play in the Atlanta area? And what did you think of them?

I'm hoping they were mostly private courses, because there's not anything public here worth traveling for (speaking as someone who only plays public golf here).

I don't want to make any goals, this year. Over the past couple years my urge to see the big ticket courses has fallen significantly, this lead me to want to play the weird, quirky, and cheap golf courses that most golfers play on. My goal for the coming year is to have is to play enough courses that fit this descriptor to have a list of courses to recommend to friends for every major Canadian City.

I played the one new course I have wanted to play for a long time. That course was Peninsula North in Melbourne.
I did not see the previous rendition. However, the new version is absolutely magnificent and should be on anybody’s list who visits this part of the world. It is right up with the Sandbelts best. The new rendition of the South course at Peninsula is also a vast improvement.

I also played Royal Melbourne West and Kingston Heath. The latest improvements keep them at the forefront of australian golf and are a joy to play.

When your Instagram account is literally "2000GolfCourses" the line for what is worth travelling to see is rather relative.

First of all Corey played with me and my young son quite a few years back. He never made us feel rushed. I had a great time.

But...I really enjoyed reading though his list of courses played and noting courses missed. Some interesting stories. I mean really, you are one mile from a Doak and pulled the ole skiperoo. I hope it wasn't something I said.

Bingo! That's why it's not called 2000bestgolfcourses

I know this is going to sound shocking coming from me, but that day riding roller coasters was more of a priority than playing Quail Crossing.  As a sometimes roller coaster enthusiast, I couldn't resist the opportunity to ride three of the best wooden roller coasters in the world at Holiday World.

So that's what I did. I drove three hours from my Aunt's house near Cincinnati, spent the morning at Holiday World, then played Victoria with you in the afternoon.  I remember you and Ward both found it hilarious that I had spent the morning at Holiday World.  I would have loved to play Quail after our round but it was getting late and I was staring at a four hour drive back to my Aunt's house so I headed back to Ohio.  But your right, it does make for an interesting story!

Shaping up to be a banner year with 12 new courses lined up across a good mix of architects, both modern and classic. Making my first pilgrimage to the Oregon coast for a buddy’s 40th extravaganza with 15 other guys, should be an all-timer!

Ohio:
  • Hyde Park Country Club
  • Inverness (sort of, first crack at the newest edition of this historic course)
New York:
  • NGLA
  • Shinnecock
Oregon:
  • Bandon Dunes
  • Pacific Dunes
  • Old Macdonald
  • Bandon Trails
Illinois:
  • Chicago Golf
  • Medinah
  • Butler National
  • Shoreacres (with some luck)

I'm glad you finally managed to play the North course, Ash.  I spent the week prior sweating bullets that something would happen and you would miss out again, but thankfully everything went to plan.

I still think the South is vastly superior, but realise I am in the minority.

Mark,

There both superb courses. Maybe with a number of plays I could change my mind. However, both are up with the best in Australia.

With six weeks in London, I'm getting a bunch of new courses in. Most excited about a trip to St Enodoc, which will also stop Saunton, more Saunton, and Westward Ho. Probably three or four sandbelt courses too.

It's my first trip to the UK. I'd appreciate a DM if anyone has any little-mentioned courses around London that are worth a look.

In the states: Braemar, Culver, Prairie Dunes, and a whole bunch of other not-sexy places.

After scrolling through this thread I've never felt poorer ;)   So many of the clubs/courses mentioned are high end private clubs. How do you even going about getting access to these courses? Regardless, the older I get the more I am convinced that the following is more true than ever:

The are three elements of golf:
1) Where you play.
2) How you play.
3) Who you play with.

The first two don't really matter.

It’s true that a lot of the courses mentioned are a strain on the wallet, but not all.  I played Painswick for the first time this week (a course I may never have heard of if it weren’t for this site, but was a definite 2019 “goal” for me). £12 for 18 holes of sheer “where the hell do I go next” fun on a beautiful spring afternoon - hard to beat.

Not sure how many new places I’ll get to this year - maybe 15 or so.  I did get off to a flying start with a first round on the Craighead course at Crail on New Year’s Day, teeing off just before dawn and putting out on the first green as the sun appeared over the North Sea, but I was never going to keep that pace up!  If I do have a goal for this year, it’s to get back to a few great courses that I’ve only seen once - 36 holes at Sunningdale in a couple of weeks is first on the list - and to see a few others that I’ve learned about from this site for the first time - Cavendish and Reddish Vale are much too close to home for me never to have seen them.

Jake,

Take a look at Tandridge, which is a cool Colt course. Also, for a fun 9-holer, you have to play Reigate Heath.
