DeFuniak Springs CC in DeFuniak Springs, Florida

An iconic DeFuniak Springs business that began in 1924 could soon be controlled by the county.

Walton County Commissioners unanimously voted last month to move forward in the process of obtaining the DeFuniak Springs Country Club.
County Administrator Larry Jones and Commissioner Danny Glidewell said this wasn’t a deal the county sought out. The club’s leadership, having seen it’s membership dwindle, approached the county as a way to improve their service to northern Walton County.

If the reviews are any indication $1 may be overpriced.

I’ve played here and the land is amazing.  Start over and just build a new course on the land.

For context...this course is built on some seriously good sandy soil. Walton County is also a huge tourist market that is somehow largely devoid of good golf. The best beaches in the country are twenty miles south of there and the airport isnt much further. This could be an incredible project for an up and coming architect to take on. Convince the county that they could have a money maker with some good design in place and you could have something pretty special. Anyone know if Mr. Keiser is looking for a winter retreat?

I feel like the name could use a nice refresh too.

Club is built on 60 acres, but tract is 190 acres. Reading between the lines I don't see much profitability in redesign, enhancement. Town is near NE corner of Eglin AFB.

It's 30 miles from one of the most affluent traveler destinations in the southeast...with the right team it could be something special. Speaking of Eglin, if you have never played the Eagle course there, its a Langord & Moreau original. Needs a restoration in the worst way but the bones are worth seeing. Very good.

Haven't played it.  Have you played Kankakee Elks?  If so, do you see any similarities?

I've driven by DeFuniak Springs many times but not played it. It's not that bad, but it's in an awkward area for a golf course. They built some Palmer course close by called Owl's Creek (or something like that) that seemed to go under as soon as they built it. Windswept Dunes struggled for awhile too. It's just a long drive from the beach.

New course logo should be a yak wearing a funny hat. You know, Da Fun Yak.
