Former site of the LA Open, one of the busiest courses in the country, I think Rancho Park should be on this list.

Agreed.  I’d also lobby for Los Verdes down in Palos Verdes and has some ocean views.  You get at least 5-6 hours to enjoy the views as play is slow as molasses.

This was my home course growing up. Definitely some cool features but the course is more about the views than the architectural features. There's enough quirk that doesn't work which cancels out the quirk that does. I think the land is very interesting, a great example of hillside golf not often seen, and also wonderful for learning the game between the kikuyu, uneven lies, and afternoon wind.

All that said, taking the views aside, it's still better than Trump LA down the road for about 1/10th the price, and Trump's course has the better views.

Adam,

I played Lakeview about twenty years ago and also thought it was awesome and a definite candidate for your article.  I've got two of my projects which are good prototypes as well:  Bacon Park, a Ross in Savannah and Keller Golf Course in St. Paul, Minnesota.  They were both sort of buried in decomposition when I started yet still beloved in their respective regions.  After complete renovations, they are both thriving and revitalized.

Avon Fields in Cincinnati is a delightful little golf course. I have not played it since high school in 2004, but remember really liking the layout and terrain. A par-66, under 5,000 yards. There's debate whether it's a Ross, a Langford / Moreau or something else.

Its a Honeyman/Langford/Diddel.

No Ross and no debate.

Wasn't it already renovated by Rees Jones just a few years ago?

Does anyone know who designed Langston Golf Course in DC?

My understanding is that the original 9 was planned in the early 1930s but it wasn't until WPA Labor that the course was finally built and opened in 1939.

I also came across an article from the mid-1950s that stated another nine was planned to be built but that dredge and fill operations needed to take place first.

It is really one of those History's Mysteries that Sven had popularized here.

Also, Arrowhead Pointe per A.G. Crockett's mention is indeed a Hidden Gem with both capital H & G.   I drove there from Athens and I still don't know how I got there, but the course is really pretty stunning.
