 8)  The World Golf Hall of Fame... Billy Payne???

Sorry, but I don't see it, MK's contribution is far more notable and inspiring to the game.

SHEEEEESH...  talk about politic correct dilution, like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducting Janet Jackson, not sure Elvis or Chuck Berry would be happy, is a wardrobe malfunction equivalent to a green Jacket?

I see your point and agree with it...

But no way in hell the HoF isn't going to kiss Green Jacket ass...

Just on the basis of overall success, Janet Jackson probably deserves a spot. She's one of the highest selling female artists ever. Of course, I wouldn't call her music rock and roll, even with the nebulous definition of that term -- but the R&R HOF has already transformed itself into a rock/pop music hall of fame anyways.

I have no idea why Billy Payne deserves a spot in the golf hall of fame, though.

I was born in 1960 and have believed and invested myself into many institutions. While most if not all have failed me throuout the years, the Masters has never let me down. It compares to nothing else.

 8) JK,

I was born in 1952 and I can oniy imagine Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts rolling over in their graves at this WTFHOF inductee, Janet Jackson notwithstanding.

Pope John Paul II was canonized a Saint. He did one hell of a worse job overseeing his flock than Billy Payne. How has Augusta avoided scandal all these years?

Keep the balance sheet positive... doesn't seem too hard at ANGC.

Payne admitted women members. Prior to that it would have been politically too risky to elevate an ANGC person

By what metric is Mike Kieser more deserving of the HOF than Billy Payne?

 8)  Well this thread details the metrics...

Should Mike Keiser be in the Hall of Fame?

 8)  Jim,

OK, one thing.......   Mike Keiser has promoted and developed new public links golf , albeit expensive, while Billy Payne promoted golf from the Green Jacket private bully pulpit.

Both are very interesting people indeed, no argument there.

He brought to millions of freezing northerners 56 minutes of commercial-free golf coverage every hour -- from Georgia's Augusta National, in the early spring, at the Masters. In terms of providing the greatest good to the greatest number, methinks BP wins going away.

HOFs are over occupied, if not over hyped. ::)

Overly simplified for effect:  Billy insisted upon being called “Chairman” while Keiser likes “Mike”.  Billy changed some rules to make it look like all were welcome. Mike has always welcomed all. Billy was appointed. Mike made it a point to involve others in helping him shape a vision.

Steve, in truth I think they should both be in the Hall of Fame -- but not before several (current & past) architects get in. And to RJ's point, yes, I think all HsOF are already over-occupied, but that's not Mr K's or Mr P's fault.

I suspect that Mr. Payne (RIP) will never be inducted posthumously for his "work" at the 1996 Olympics, so why not throw his immortal soul a biscuit for keeping ANGC solvent.

Seems to me that Billy Payne is very worthy of inclusion. Didn't he basically lead the charge to implement the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, the Latin America Amateur Championship, and the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship? I think and hope those three contests will lead to many more people taking up the game. And while it's not starting on his watch, I bet he was the leader in having ANGC host the Augusta National Women's Amateur in a few months.

And while some might say "well, he was the chairman of ANGC, so he was automatically in a position to be taken seriously with these things"...then why did none of the chairmen before him do those things? Why did no one at the R & A or USGA do those things? The fact that Mr. Payne brought those two organizations in to be partners with ANGC does not diminish the fact that Mr. Payne was the leader.

Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal also had serious advantages, but they're in the hall of fame because they took those advantages and made them work.

As far as Mike Keiser is concerned, I am a huge fan of his, and I look forward to the day when he is in the hall of fame. It will be well-deserved for what he has done for the game, I think.

Agreed. To the average golfer around the world, South America or Asia especially, as well as any golf spectator or elite amateur player, the positive impact of Billy Payne far surpasses that of Mike Kaiser. Even more if you are a women. I think it is well deserved, and hopefully MK gets in someday as well.

I'll be lambasted as politically incorrect but Dennis Walters being elected to the HOF seems like a stretch.
