Many urban courses have the problems of drug addicts finding their wooded areas and stream banks being pretty good places to hide.  We have often been warned to be on the lookout for shady characters.

Regarding the wooded areas you mention, I've seen some pretty dramatic buckthorn and "underbrush" clearing in the lake county forest preserves of late.

I've wondered if more wooded areas were cleared of buckthorn and brush, etc, there would be less cover for shady activity.

I understand it's being done to improve the health of the oaks in some of these wooded areas.

George, not impossible.  Back as an LA student in the 1970's we learned it was no longer feasible to plant bushy areas due to crimes.  High canopy trees and grass, that's the ticket.

During my apprenticeship at Howley Hall GC near Leeds there was the body of a young girl found in the undergrowth behind the 10th tee. Part of the course was closed for 3 days whilst the police carried out their investigation. Sadly, they never found who murdered her.

When I used to run firearms operations in the Met our standard covert formation was 4 large cars each with 3 heavily armed officers. Golf club car parks were a good place to hide up whilst supporting surveillance operations as by and large golfers aren’t inquisitive and there are plenty of cars but not much activity going on so we could “disappear”.
