There still seems to be a formal distinction though between "bunker" and "penalty area" though.
There is, but bunkers and penalty areas were both hazards in previous Rules (2018), so again, a positive development.

When you have a bunker that joins up to a sandy/scrub zone (whether it is penalty or general area), there is still a distinction somewhere that will have to be made because of the different rules for grounding the club.
My point was the rules for the "general area sandy area" and the "bunker" are now closer than they were in 2018, so a step in the right direction if you really want to see less defined edges, etc. Just call all the bunkers "waste areas" and yeah, players can ground their clubs and take practice swings, but they were doing that in 2018 at Kiawah Island (and before), and at Pinehurst in 2014.

Without it, how could there ever be the good old days, for us curmudgeon wannabes?

I fear the further loss of soul, the game appears to suffer, as modern minds evolve. But, If Kyle is correct that it frees up artistic interpretation, it could be a good thing.

I also find it interesting how this well written article has evaded the main stream.
