McConnell Golf
« on: February 03, 2019, 11:18:43 AM »
Has anyone out there had any experience with McConnell Golf or any of their properties?  They have some nice clubs under their umbrella including Holston Hills, Sedgefield and Old North State Club. I have always been somewhat leery of management companies but like anything some are better than others. Are they good stewards of their properties?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Until this year I belonged to Musgrove Mill. I left only because I just didn't get down there as much. It is an eight hour drive. When McConnell bought it he put a bunch of money into the course. I've been to every property. I found that he under promises and over performs. I give him high marks. Each club has wonderful facilities and MM, Old North State, and Sedgefield have onsite lodging. The courses are always in excellent condition.

I think McConnell only manages one course -- the Members Club at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach. I'm pretty sure they own every other course in the portfolio, which probably makes a difference.

With that said, I've played Sedgefield, Old North State, Treyburn, The Reserve, Musgrove Mill, and the Members Club. They are all in excellent condition (with the exception of the Dye Course at Sedgefield -- but it has serious drainage problems and has for a long time). I've played the Members Club several times and it's always been in good shape with excellent service, so I'd say they've done a good job with the one course they manage.

McConnell Golf, as mentioned earlier, isn't a management company.  With the one noted exception, McConnell has bought each of the courses in the group.

And yes, McConnell is a good steward.  He pours money into the courses, and each is in impeccable condition.  The only exception to this that I'm aware of had to do with winter kill at the two Sedgefield courses this past spring, all of which has been addressed.  The attention to detail at the courses and in the clubhouses is always impressive.

I'll put it this way:  If I could afford it, I'd join one of the McConnell properties in the RDU area in a heartbeat.

He bought Providence CC in Charlotte four years ago, and delivered on what he was required to including course and clubhouse renovations. The course reopened last Fall so 2019 is the first full year and this rain hasn’t helped, but I expect the conditioning to be good.

Winterkill is no reflection on the superintendent or the owner.  It is entirely weather conditions.

I'm aware of this, but thanks.

I believe that McConnell also manages, but does not own, the Raleigh Golf Association (RGA). I have heard good things regarding their management of that place, though they did fire the longtime pro when they took over.
