Hugh Wilson, President Wilson, Football, OB, Crump, & Curling
« on: February 03, 2019, 11:48:12 AM »
Since most of the nation is frozen solid on this Super Bowl Sunday I thought this 1919 Philadelphia Inquirer article might be timely.   World War I was winding down with the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations was being formed.

It seems sometimes the more things change, the more they stay the same... Stay warm and enjoy the game!

From the more things change, the more they stay the same, consider this 1917 article about the need for a standardized ball (originally found by my buddy Joe Bausch).

Great stuff Mike. Thanks for posting.

I did not know Ben Sayers became the pro at Merion. That would have been a big coup for Merion.

I think it was George Sayers who went to Merion?

It was George Sayers who went to Merion. Benny Junior eventually took over from his dad at NB. Mind you I think the old man did go and visit his son in the US on more than one occasion and could very well have done a bit of coaching while there.

I'm not sure if Benny Sayers was ever the official paid pro at Merion although I did find one other account that mentioned him in that regard.

What is known for certain as others mentioned is that his son George was the professional at Merion and proud Dad came here for several extended "vacations" and spent quite a bit of time at Merion during those years, sometimes playing competitively and other times just sampling the local courses, including Pine Valley, Seaview, among many others.

Benny Sayers was also present in the first group that ever played Cobb's Creek, along with local luminary E.T. Stotesbury who drove the first ball, as seen below;

Boy - Mike, your post is shot through with connections to Springdale GC history, which was founded as the Princeton Golf Club by local people and Princeton University Alumni.

Percy Pyne's father Moses Taylor Pyne is one of the founders of Springdale.
Our course symbol is the PU Graduate College - "Cleveland Tower" named in honor of former President Grover Cleveland who moved to Princeton after he left the White House and ultimately became a PU Trustee.  His home "Westland" is on Hodge Road.
Cleveland was supportive of establishing the Graduate College (quad) in it's ultimate location and had a dispute with Woodrow Wilson who wanted the new College on the main part of campus.
( See this article: http://etcweb.princeton.edu/CampusWWW/Companion/cleveland_grover.html )
We have no evidence that Cleveland played golf, but Wayne Morrison sent me an old newspaper article with a drawing of Woodrow Wilson at the Princeton Golf Club - so he appears to have played.
As you well know and pointed out in another thread, Hugh Wilson played his college golf at Springdale and joined our Green Committee in 1900 to plan the move of the course from it's original location.

We hired William Flynn to do the re-design of the course in 1927 through Hugh Wilson.
Our golf pro found some materials indicating that in the 1920s Springdale did home/away matches with Pine Valley and Somerset Hills.  I was born much too late !
Ernie Ransom - the former P V President who died a few years ago was a Princeton Alum.   I met him at Chechesee Creek Club.
We could probably go on and on like this.

Hi Bill,

Great to hear from you and yes, there are plenty of Princeton related threads running through this one.

You neglected to mention that William Flynn's 1926 redesign of Springdale was meant to be a tribute to his mentor, Hugh Wilson, who had sadly passed in February of 1925.

This snippet from the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger dated January 14th, 1927 (found by Mr. Bausch) tells that story;

Was trying not to completely hijack your thread !

Bill,

No issue with threadjacking....this is sort of a free-form post and things here on GCA generally meander in various directions anyway.

Speaking of George Sayers, in 1915 he designed the first nine holes of what was known as the Torresdale Frankford Country Club in northeast Philadelphia.   In 1919 Donald Ross designed 18 holes and it's unknown at this time if any of Sayers routing or holes remained but that may be a fun avenue to explore.

A few years back that club was purchased by the Union League of Philadelphia and is now known as "The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale".
