Anyone Know Where/Who This Beauty Comes From?
« on: January 14, 2019, 04:07:25 PM »
The photo is from 1934, but there's no info on where it was taken.

It's definitely a well guarded and rollicking green/site, and a heck of a shot if the photo was taken from the tee box.

Joshua,

I was looking at their site, but it didn't strike me as being the spot.

Jim,

Could it be in the Poconos ?
It reminds me of this.
( Let me know if no picture shows. It’s an old Photobucket-hosted picture, maybe invisible now.)

Hi Neil,

The terrain would be similar, maybe Mike Cirba would know of something in that neck of the woods. The photo comes from the Janet Brewster Murrow and Edward R Murrow Collection held at Tufts Univ. There are  photos from the same time from a cross country driving trip ( I think one said "Honeymoon") they took, some of them are in the mountains around Tenn and NC.

Good to see your voice  ;D

Looks like it could be the 17th at Farmington CC in Charlottesville.

I'm not so sure Peter.

The old picture shows a creek running on the left of 17 green and Historical aerials does not show one in the 60s, (current picture doesn't show one either). The 18th hole looks a bit different as well.

Even though 80 years have passed between them, there are similarities between the photo of FCC's 17th green found in the 'Courses By Country' write up...

http://golfclubatlas.com/farmington-country-club-pgii/17c/

....and the one posted earlier. I'd say that Fred Findlay knew how to build a green.  ;D  Too bad it didn't remain in this state.

But I think the clubhouse views seal the deal. Although hard to make out in the old photo, I think the location of the pillars, bay window, gable w/the round window (which can also be seen in the CbyC photo), number and location of chimneys, matches those in the new photo. The setting is also the same, with the clubhouse high above the green.

I think Dave and Pete got it!

P.S. Look at the bridge in the B/W picture (above the fronting bunker) and then look at the write up for the 18th hole.

I will concede defeat, sure looks like it after further analysis.  I wonder why they would fill in that entire ravine left of the original green?  Maybe they used those funky landforms from 17 to do it...  ;)

Really cool find and exercise.   Late to the game but wondering if Pete &/or David have played Farmington?

I don't know if David has played there, but I expect so. I never have. I just tried to find additional evidence for proof David was correct.  By the way the closest I have been was enroute to Ballyhack for a Dixie Cup.

Kalen -  Tampered with, yes, but you can see much more of it as it climbs the hill in this wider angle photo. Any modern photos I've found don't show enough of the left side to really know the extent of what was done in that area. This photo embiggens w/a
click.

Jim

I would call it more than just your basic tampering.  Creek/ravine gone and replaced with a cart path.  I'm sure the ODGs are smiling down on that!!  ;D

P.S.  I remain amazed at how adept many on this site are at identifying golf holes from yesteryear in old fuzzy B & Ws!!

Kalen,

I am looking at aerials from '37, '57, '66, '74, '80, '90, '96,  and whatever date the latest Google map shows. What you believe to be the creek is actually just a line of conifers, the creek is located well to the other side (SE) of them. The cart path doesn't seem to have impacted the creek, although it does lie on roughly the same ground as the conifers. The biggest change to its bunker complex occurred between 1980 and 1990, but the present set is a Bill Love creation and more in line with what was there.

Great work Jim. I've played the course many times and didn't see it.

BTW, a fun course. Recommended if in the area.

Thanks Bob,

I thought it might take more time to identify this green, and like Kalen, I'm always amazed at the breadth of knowledge found here.
Hope all is well.
