Off topic, but how can anyone who has played Sand Hills write it as Sandhills.

That would be like writing Pebblebeach or Pinevalley.

Thought the same thing.

Really? My mistake was that jarring?
I live in NC and play most of my golf in the sandhills area. But however you spell (or I misspell) it, Sand Hills is an absolute blast, especially in a blasting wind.

Of the ones anybody here has heard of, Brora.

Among those you haven't, my old home course in Topeka.  Shawnee CC, a Ross layout.  Sadly abused by the lack of budget over the years.  The greens have shrunk in size and the new owners lock those sizes in by surrounding them with zoysia.

I also think Southern Dunes in AZ is a hoot.
Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

I'm going to play Wilshire this year and have seen it pop up several times, what stands out to you?  I know Kyle Phillips did a renovation several years back.

Old Mac in the wind would be my choice.

Lawsonia, Mid Pines, Cypress, Medinah #2, Old Elm.

I really like Old Mac but it wasn't much fun in 50+ mph and rain.  The situation was tolerable for the first two holes until I climbed the hill by the barren tree.  I was using a trolly and at times it left the ground with my clubs attached and me barely holding on. Waves of rain/water cascading horizontally across the ground.  Only finished 9 holes before I called it quits.   The most disappointing part of the day was finding out that Bandon Dunes offers vouchers for extreme conditions.

How many times have you seen Sand Hills referenced on this site? So yes, it was eye opening when I saw it. I know you live in the sandhills, but Sand Hills is the pinnacle of modern architecture.

Jeff--

It's got to be one of the cleverest uses of less than a hundred acres for golf out there. Not once does it feel cramped despite being on a pretty small piece of property, and despite the firmness of the turf making the ball hop and roll all over. The barranca, that winds through the course plays as large a role as possible but doesn't feel like a crutch, because you interact with it in a bunch of different ways. The greens are fast and have contours that can both help and hurt. The little trench right of the second green is an awesome little short grass hazard. All kinds of interesting and fun stuff. And beyond the course, the vibe and people are nice. The bar overlooking the back nine is a great spot to relive the round.

Wow! Reminds me from when I misspelled the name of the subject of a report that I did back in junior high school, except that I misspelled the name exactly the same way every single time in my report. Brain cramps can happen, but surely you can look past that to the point that Sand Hills belongs high on the fun list. And I think I was wearing my Sand Hills hoodie while doing so.

I guess the hoodie only has the SH on it ;). And yes Sand Hills is high on the fun list, most certainly in the Top 10.

Brain cramps do happen especially when you are talking about a subject you are excited about. It's all good.

and I should have added Prestwick, and the stretch from the 3rd to the 11th at RND Westward Ho!, which just may be the most entertaining nine holes of golf in the entire United Kingdom. My 'most fun in golf' is always by the sea. It just is.

How did no-one mention Prestwick before?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I mentioned Prestwick on previous page.
Can't wait to go back.  Have met several folks who are members.   The only issue there is that it rains more on the west coast than the East, which is not fun.  North Berwick gets much less rain and less often.
