Best Golf in London on a Saturday?
« on: January 03, 2019, 09:47:52 PM »
I am flipping through the Confidential Guide for a new course to try on the west side of London for a Saturday in July.  I’ve played both at Sunningdale and Walton Heath.

Do any of the clubs of architectural interest in London allow outside play on a Saturday?

The Addington will let you on after midday.

I also quite enjoyed Leatherhead when I played there. Not in The Addington's league architecturally, but it also 40% of the price.

Royal Ashdown Forest allows Saturday play, at least they did a few years ago when I played at 10:30am.

I wouldn't go to Addington if I were you. It has fallen off a cliff.

The maintenance is atrocious, because it is ran even more on a shoestring than ever.
Expect very bad greens and aprons. Should a 1913 Abercrombie design of that potential quality be an aerial game course? I think not. Unfortunately they let anyone trample the greens when frozen, and you can lose your ball a meter away from the putting surface because it's cheaper not to mow around greens. Leave the fairway and you'll find yourself in brambles and stones. They made design mistakes like on 10th: who nowadays decides to flatten a crumpled fairway?
A great design, good fun if you play in perfect conditions, but only if you hit every fairway and green. Nice views and quiet.
No recovery shot though, no strategy left, trees impeding, silly OB, concrete-style runoffs...it's a shame.
The Addington is in real danger of oblivion. We might lose that historic gem for good.  It needs to be taken over urgently and ran as a members club.

Walton Heath, Hankley Common for the best ones.
Addington Palace is a very decent cheap quirky and fun course next door to the Addington and boast some of the best greens of Surrey.

OChatriot -

Maybe some of the members at Wimbledon Park can take the proceeds of the sale of their course and buy the Addington. ;)

I have never heard these opinions expressed so scathingly, but you aren't wrong!

Walton Heath Old is excellent, but getting seriously expensive!  For those on a budget, consider Reigate Heath....I think its better than Hankley Common.

It's not the only one!

With an appointment in Chester tomorrow, and in need of some links practice, I phoned Wallasey to see how much a round was.

SEVENTY QUID!  In January!

I last played there 18 months ago in September and paid £45!

I understand supply and demand an all that, but things are getting crazy.  I've plumped for Prestatyn instead at fifteen pounds!  :)
