Steve,

How is pace of play at destination clubs different? Don't they still have members playing behind you? I thought us old guys were supposed to enjoy every round as it was our last.

Thomas,

Still seems they aren't getting it, even after clarifying.

For me, I rarely think of it in those terms.  Its almost always in terms of how long will it take to go to the range, play 9, play 18, etc....

But it does vary a lot depending if i'm on vacation or trying to squeeze something in after work...

John,

Can't generalize beyond "motivated golfers play faster than tourists."

If someone gets stacked up behind us, it'd very rarely be because of our pace.  Now, I have to admit when I played The Loop, I kept turning around to take additional pictures...

Does anybody on this board other than MB, Jaka or AG like to play for something? Golfing for the sake it holds little interest for me these days, I enjoy competitive golf. Of course I live in So. Cal with packed tee sheets and 7 minute spacing. If you’re putting everything out it’s almost impossible to get around in les than 4 hours, 4 hours and 20 minutes seems about right.

Sadly none of these players who get around in 2-3 hours come to GCA Events!

Golf should ideally take 6 hours including lunch, neither activity should have primacy on the clock.

I'll play for a few bucks, say a $5 Nassau, preferably against folks honest handicaps.  I try on every shot without regard to the competition, though I doubt that I am "putting everything out"/grinding most of the time (if you mean hitting everything in the hole, nearly never, though we are talking about very short putts and only saving a few seconds a handful of times during a round).

You can call my pro shop and I think that they will tell you that our group of 2-4 players nearly always plays in 2:50-3:30.  We all walk and are usually one of the first three or four groups off, all relatively fast players.  We do bump into the maintenance crew fairly regularly, which does slow us down a bit.

I've been to many GCA events and it is clear that we talk a far superior game in many respects than we play.  Part of that is all the yakking we do, something I am particularly guilty of.  Yes, I still remember the 6-hour round of the initial King Putter at Barona Creek.

Seeing how no one is interested in answering Thomas' actual question..  ;D

I'll pose the following question....  Why the hell is everyone in such a damn hurry to get done and off the golf course?

I understand 5+ hour grinds suck where its hit and wait, wait, wait... but I've played countless 4 to 4:15 hour rounds where the only actual wait was on the par 3s, due to the nature of short holes. But Don't you love golf? Don't you enjoy hanging with your buddies or making new ones?  Isn't it nice to be outside and on the course? Or noticing things you never hadn't before?  :D

I would rather do the serious hangin' with a beer in front me while sat at a table.  If there is time to tell 2-3 minute stories on the course then play is too slow.

I play very few tournament rounds. Way too many provisionals hit after shots  in the desert.
75% of rounds I play as a single and have been pleasantly surprised with those I have met both near home and while at vacation sites.
If I join 2-3 others I prefer 3-3.5 hours. If longer than 4 hours I am checking my phone way too often.
If I am free to go it alone usually 2 hours if riding and 2.5-3 hours walking.

3:15 when walking and enjoying it.  2:30 when walking fast and focusing on only the shots.

I remember several years ago walking to the train with a good friend (golfer) and a tennis player (since converted).  He opined that he couldn't understand our love for golf because it took 4 hours to play.  My friend agreed stating that he would be happier if he could play for 8.  Its not the amount of time that we are ont he course, it's the time spent waiting on others.

Folks, do we really need to be on the course for more than 3 hrs....unless that is it’s a cunnng plan to get away from the other half and/or the family for a long period of time! :)
Fit golf in around time rather than a prescriptive number of statutory holes?

I dislike holding up others behind us even more than being held up (which I dislike immensely). Besides not needing new friends, one of the reasons I resist my wife’s efforts to play with new people is being concerned that they are slow players and we will be the group that backs things up.

Well, in SE TX from May to Oct or so, we get done quick as possible, so as not to roast!

You can always quit early and not disturb the other golfers because they don't live life on your schedule. How hard is it really to get the first tee time of the day.

Golf should ideally take 6 hours including lunch, neither activity should have primacy on the clock.

2.5 hours for golf and 3.5 for lunch, nothing better  ;D

Like others the total time is to an extent immaterial as it's about being able to get on with the golf without keeping anyone waiting behind. On a regular non-comp day there should be no excuse for either being held up or holding anyone else up. All it takes is to be aware of other groups and being considerate rather than holding your ground because of some notional time frame for playing a hole, nine holes or a round.

Re gca events - yes they are slower but for good reason. Usually you are meeting someone for the first time or catching up with them and therefore doing a fair amount of talking which naturally slows things down. I think it very likely that each and every person who attends gca events goes quicker when they are playing with their regular golfing friends. A case in point will be the games at Silloth tomorrow. We'll be playing as three balls behind fourballs who will be regular groupings. I bet the fourballs get in at least a hole ahead.

That is certainly a valid reason, great answer.  So other than weather, why are you all in such a damn hurry?  ;D ;D

I understood the original question, but I don't have any way to answer it outside the context of playing a round of golf.  I don't go to the golf course to spend a particular amount of time, in much the same way that I don't go a restaurant or a theatre to spend a particular amount of time, and in the same way that I don't have an optimum number of pages when I start to read a book.
I play golf to play a round of golf on a golf course.  Sometimes that takes longer than other times, but I don't ever recall finishing quickly and thinking, "Well, I just play for another 43 minutes until I get to my optimum time!"  I HAVE walked off the course a time or two over the years when it took too long, but that's not the same thing either.
It's like asking, "How long do you like to watch basketball for?"   I like to watch A GAME.
"Golf...is usually played with the outward appearance of great dignity.  It is, nevertheless, a game of considerable passion, either of the explosive type, or that which burns inwardly and sears the soul."      Bobby Jones

That makes perfect sense, but i'm guessing most of us are time-boxed in terms of:

Do I have 1 hour for something golf related, or 3, or 5 or even all day?  I wouldn't guess anyone thinks, I have 2.5 hours before I need to be somewhere so I'm going to try to play 18....or maybe they do...

The closest analogy I can think of is in my younger days when funds were very limited. When going out for dinner, most would read the menu from left to right, but I would usually read it from right to left by finding a price that fit my budget and think "what am I having for dinner?"  ;)

I hope I understand the OPs question, after all these years and despite not wearing a watch I pretty well know the pace of play, as soon as things start drifting beyond 4 hours I start to lose a bit of patience.

This is a problem because 4:30 is now an acceptable pace at my club, which is simply a function of too many members and too little spacing.

I wish I could be one of those smell the roses types but the longer it goes through 4 hours in summer the more the temperature goes through 100, I can hear the siren song of the cold lager and potentially a horse that should have had my hard earned on it has just won.

If I have 4:15 I'd rather play 27 holes. Or 18 and spend another 1:30 doing something else.

If I'm playing alone (and well) on my home course-2.5 hours.  On an unfamiliar course of architectural significance, I'll slow down but 4 hours is ideal.  I now avoid tracks that are tight with lots of rough where searching for mis-hit balls are inevitable which lead to protracted rounds.  As for charity scrambles, bring your patience and count your blessings if you finish under 6 hours.

God, the group can't be that bored!  I know I should have become an engineer.  ;)

Really, does anyone really go out to the course with a fixed time in mind to play whatever # of holes that allows?  I guess I might if I lived or worked a few minutes for the course and just wanted a little practice or fresh air.

As to the points raised by Kalen and Sean, I'm a big believer that when you're in Rome ........  A mate and I played our last round after our public transportation Buda (never again) at a small club near London (Denham).  As we were readying to tee off, two elderly couples pushing trollies, each with a sort of Spaniel on a leash, approached the area.  We thought of asking if the'd like to go through, but decided that we'd loose them in a hole or two.

After playing three or four holes and feeling their peering eyes on our backs, we asked them to go through which they did courteously, but without much talk.  They were playing proper foursomes- when the men teed off, the women would already be nearing the landing zone and vice versa.  Wisely, the club had short cuts that allowed walks to the next shots.

They probably finished three or more holes ahead of us.  We played in around three hours, cleaned up in the locker room, and had a sandwich in a beer.  When we left to get a cab, probably close to an hour after we finished, the two couples were still at the bar with half-full glasses.

Many years later, as we finish our three hour rounds, slam the trunk of our cars, and race to our next destination trying to see how much we can cram in into a day, I have to wonder what we might be missing.
