Interesting that Ogilvy never attempted to pull rank to gain access to the Old Course.. Although it would be pretty hard to squeeze a twelvesome in any day of the year.

His review of The Castle Course reminded me of James Braid's review of Cleeve Hill.   ;)

Always good to read OP - a fine fellow he seems to be.

I thought: now that's the main difference between gca then and now, ie there are no HAD TOs anymore.

To play Devil's Advocate: the very thing we praise Bill Coore for -- ie spending weeks walking around a 1000 acre site to find the best golf holes, and then asking the client to buy more land -- basically ensures that there'll be no HAD TOs for him, and thus no Elies.

This is one of the problems of golf architecture codification...which pervades modern design thinking.  I am getting a hint that many archies want to break free of this established codification and we are starting to see projects built that simply would have been passed over not all that many years ago.  Here is to hoping that we see more archies use available land and build the best, most interesting courses of which they are capable...regardless of prescribed norms.  I have a lot of time for HAD TO (or more accurately...WHY WOULDN'T I) architecture.

If it’s about golf and written by GO it’s going to be worth reading (or, for a Podcast, listening to).

A lot of people in or from the British Isles have Norman blood due to the 1066 invasion... Including myself.

Those French are so very persuasive with the ladies when they travel..
