Ballantyne Golf Club Closing
« on: June 10, 2019, 09:55:37 AM »
Another one bites the dust:

https://www.charlotteagenda.com/169088/ballantyne-transformation-plans/

I'm pretty new to the area and haven't played the course but I have used the range a bunch of times. Not shocked given the other development in the area. I am set to play it in a few weeks though.

Again new to the area but if I understand my South Charlotte golf history well enough there was a Doak not far that made way for a shopping plaza/urban center/insert trendy buzzword.

Although if I remember correctly from another post Tom said that had always been the plan and the golf course was somewhat a placeholder.

Joe, do I understand it properly that there is a resort named Ballantyne and a country club as well? I played a Rees Jones course the year it opened a remember it as being private.

Yes, this is the public course next to the freeway.  Ballantyne Country Club is not far away, but located in a housing development.

This golf course was always going to be developed.  It's located right off the freeway surrounded by high/mid rise office buildings.

It is not a huge loss to the golf world.  While the public golf options in Charlotte are limited, this certainly wasn't a very good course.  I live very close to it, played it once, and that was enough for me.  They charged a premium to the rest of the area publics, and kept it in very good condition, but from a design/interest standpoint, it was not worth the $.  For less than half the cost, you can drive 10 minutes to Fort Mill, where there is a very compelling Ross front nine, and a decent back nine (which is better than anything at Ballantyne).
New for '24: Monifieth x2, Montrose x2, Panmure, Carnoustie x3, Scotscraig, Kingsbarns, Elie, Dumbarnie, Lundin, Belvedere, The Loop x2, Forest Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs x2, Kapalua Plantation, Windsong Farm, Minikahda, Old Barnwell Kids Course(!)

The Doak course was Charlotte Golf Links. It was a very good course by anyone not named Doak. If I recall correctly, he and Jim Urbina had to compress their desired build schedule. It was an early course, so his ideas were coalescing. Would have been a great museum piece.

Stunned to see that this still exists. Hope you can access it.
