Tennessee Chad,

When do you get your drivers license? I'm motivated by the localized flavor of your list to stay closer to home this year.

Connecting dots, Tennessee Chad's interest in Tennessee golf courses is "associative".

I played a lot of golf this year and some excellent courses. With the Stock Market the way it is, I may have to stay closer to home next year! These are in some kind of order.

Portmarnock
The European Club
Congaree
Ballyhack
Nanea
Kuki’o
Princeville Makai
Mauna Kea
Dormie
Hokulia
Forest Dunes the Loop (Black)

St George’s Hill
Brora
Woking
Golspie
Swinley Forest
Royal Dornoch
Mid Pines
Nairn
Castle Stuart
Hope Valley

I got some grief earlier in the year when I said that I preferred Golspie to RD and much preferred Woking to Castle Stuart. As I think back on those assessments, I stand by them. The surprise for me is how Woking remains mesmerizing. And even though it is my own list, Nairn is shortchanged.

Fascinating list, especially with La Purisma in it. I played it a few years ago. It could be really good if it got some tender loving care and and a few dollars. It deserve more attention than it gets.

My favourites, nearly an all England cast this year with a two notable exceptions.

North Berwick
Kington
Cavendish
Elie
Pulborough...wow
Princes...I fail to understand why Shore/Dunes isn't much more respected
Beau Desert...new found admiration and respect
Cleeve Cloud
Appleby...play it
Minch Old

I see that Mammoth Dunes and Straits course aren’t on your list.  Did you play them?  Or do they not make your 10?

I didn’t play 10 courses this year. In fact I barely played 10 rounds.

But I saw a few new (for me) courses of which Leven was my preferred option. Also seeing the complete Fazio / Marlzoff revamp of Adare was a new experience that gives us a completely different angle for Irish courses.

Between kids, work, and terrible summer weather in the mid-Atlantic, I was only able to squeeze in golf around work trips. But I did play some great new courses this year.

Sleepy Hollow
The Creek
Moraine
Baltimore CC
Fenway
White Bear
Windsong Farm
Springfield
Olympic Hills
Bulle Rock

2018 will be the year I played the least amount of golf since we opened the Warren GC back in 2000.  The one upside to traveling so much this year was the exposure to some really good golf when I did play:

Talking Stick North
TPC Scottsdale
Royal Melbourne West
Yarra Yarra
Heathcote
Terrey Hills GC
St, Michaels GC
Long Reef GC
Mona Vale GC
Trump National

I'm hoping to get back on the bandwagon next season for a couple GCA events!!

I only played six of my own courses this year, but they were all good ones (listed chronologically):

The Loop
St. Emilion
Tara Iti
St. Andrews Beach
Ballyneal
The Mulligan

Setting those aside, my top five were:

Crystal Downs
Bel Air
New South Wales
Victoria, Sri Lanka
Kukio

I saw quite a few new courses this year, but I only managed to play 30 rounds of golf, on 21 different courses.

Tommy,

La Purisima is one of my favorites and I've been fortunate to play it many times over the past 25 years. If you are ever in So. Cal. you should try to get to Crystalaire CC. Many USGA and SCGA qualifiers are played there, but is unknown to many golfers mainly due to its location.

A very good year for me. Too hard to put these in order:

The Old Course
Sunningdale Old
Sunningdale New
Walton Heath Old
Swinley Forest
Castle Stuart
St George’s Hill
Huntercombe
Formby
Turnberry Ailsa

And it’s not finished yet.  Off to St Andrews in a couple of days for Hogmanay (and hopefully a couple more rounds at least!).

Sean it seems you have a challenging relationship with Beau Desert. Sometimes you seem disappointed with the course. Is it how the course is prepared that causes that?

I'd like to hear more about Lofoten. As a Norwegian I am intrigued. I have wanted to go Lofoten for a long time anyway. The area looks stunning. With golf I have to be certain I get there now. What is the experience like?
