Sadly, the so called enthusiasts I meet are not even that.  Often times after golf is brought up and they reveal they are "hardcore"...I ask them what they thought of Bandon, and 80% of the time I get blank stares, while the other responses are some form of "I've been meaning to get there, but they don't allow carts"

My main interest would be to find out about what excites them in golf, where their enthusiasm lies, and have a conversation about that. I'm much less interested in hearing them bitch about what they don't like. If they're all about the notches they've got in their Top 100 belt, I'll listen (but ultimately don't care).

"You've won the powerball; what do you do to make a golf community better for its participants?"

The obvious answer being "Do something cool at Braid Hills."

That Cypress Point logo on your sweater matches your eyes perfectly. Your husband must be a golfer?

- funny, I'm not married.

Ok fair enough, so what did you think of the course then?

David, were you hitting on Condoleeza Rice?

As a former bar fly at a few famous golf pubs my favourite question was "have you played any good matches recently?"

The answer to this question tells me a lot about how the person views golf as a game.

Yesterday it occurred to me that if I were to purchase today's pay-per-view match between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, the primary motivation would be to check out Shadow Creek, which I've never seen before.  How to fashion that into a question...
"I'm going to check out Shadow Creek on the pay-per-view event today.  How about you?"
