The Loop - Forest Dunes - Allowing Carts in 2019
« on: November 20, 2018, 05:31:18 PM »
Gents,

Forest Dunes has announced that they will be allowing carts on the Loop in 2019 and I must admit that I am not surprised.  The Loop is amazing and its a must play for any golf enthusiast.  The bump and run options are limitless and most people have a blast playing it.  Sadly, when I was up at Forest Dunes this past year I noticed that the course was getting quite a bit less play than Forest Dunes and it shocked me.  I am def not saying there was nobody on the course but the times I went up there it appeared that most people were not playing it and I suspected that most people do not prefer to walk.  Its sad but true and although courses like Bandeon and Sand Valley may be the exception alot of people from younger generations just dont care to walk.  I tried to get a few friends to travel to the Loop this year and everyone said...."if I cant take a cart I'm out".

I have no doubt that Forest Dunes and The Loop will be very successful in the future and I think this was the right move and the end result will be a lot more people playing an amazing golf course.  I think its safe to say that most people on this site have no issues walking but is it fair to say that most golf resorts need to allow carts????

That is great news. I just hope the constant drone of beep, beep, beep doesn't get annoying on odd days.

Hope that they come with large screen GPS, USB ports and a 100db omnidirectional Bose speaker system.

Is it true that it's the "younger generations" that don't want to walk? It's only my personal experience, but the next time my father or any of his two-dozen golf friends prefer to walk it will be the first time in their entire lives.

Where is Melvin when you really need him !! :)

For the record, 2018 should be roughly 30 rounds of golf via:
  • 29 walking
  • 1 cart (charity outing)
  • 1 walk-off (paid, forced to take cart, asked for and received refund) from an old standby Orrin Smith course that is the PERFECT walking course - "now policy"...
I am proud to say that my son is now a walker, but I know he caves when he plays with his friends...

It is nice for me that the reversible course reversed a stance. That puts it on my radar, at least. Now waiting for Sand Valley.

What does this mean for the fescue fairways?  I am under the impression that fescue cannot handle cart traffic.  That is part of the reason why Sand Valley and Bandon are walking only.  Will they have to reseed fairways?

If they can limit the cart traffic - x number of rounds per day - the fairways will still be fine.  Kingsley allows carts, and hasn't suffered for it, but they don't do 20,000 rounds per year as Forest Dunes wants to.

The dreaded "keep it on the paths" is another poor option.

If neither works, they will eventually have to convert the fairways, but they don't plan to do so right away.  That would be a loss, IMO.  I just had an unsolicited note from the irrigation designer Mike Kuhn a couple of days ago, telling me how much fun he's had playing on a real fast and firm surface there.

Hmmmm....

Love to go there before they split the fairways with white cement golf cart paths but afraid I won't make it before next year. Hope I can make it before the water fountains are added.  :-\

I am 57 and walk and carry at my club. We have a lot of plus handicap younger members and they typically ALWAYS ride. It blows me away these young guys never walk. We are our fair share of older members that ride, but it is mostly younger members walking.
