Lookout Mountain is great. Just curious (genuinely)...what more famous course is in Chattanooga?

After an amazing 2017, I didn't play as many new courses in 2018. Had some great repeats, but not as much new stuff.

The easy highlight was Camargo. It was a bit of a personal white whale as I lived in Cincinnati for a couple of years in the '90s and never played it. It's really good.

Other cool places I saw: Carolina Golf Club, all three courses at Streamsong, Davenport Country Club and Winter Park 9.

One that really stands out though is a course that I would probably never have played if I hadn’t first stumbled across this site a couple of years ago - Huntercombe. I wouldn’t necessarily say that it was my favourite (that would be Sunny Old, if I had to choose) but playing there with the course to myself on a beautiful summer’s evening is an experience I won’t forget, and I left with a completely different perspective on how great a set of greens on an inland course could be.  I’d love to understand why no one has been bold or brilliant enough to build anything as good in the UK in the 120 or so years since (or at least, if they have I’ve yet to see them).
Couldn't agree more, James! I was lucky to have enjoyed my share of evening games at Huntercombe this past summer. There are few more tranquil places to play.

Played quite a few great courses, but only s few new ones.  Fortunately, they were as great as my expectations
Cabot
Highland Links  Though the fairways had
                              suffered massive ice damage
                              over the previous winter, the
                              greens were rolling fast and
                              pure.  The poor conditioning
                              rap was not true.
Essex County Club.   This Ross was impressive
                                      the many ivI' played
Philadelphia Cricket.  Among my top Tillie's

Revisited Myopia and Wannamoisett, and need to play them again because they are that interesting and great
Restoration of Creek solved the two biggest weaknesses----drive it anywhere left in rough on 2 for angle of attack----now strategically bunkered, and the 12th green had contour restored along with a couple teeing possibilities on the 11th green complex and improved sand dunes

After a return of several years, Engineers still holds up to or is better than anything past the top 30 on the various lists.  The raters who continue to fast play it before or after PRC or Creek, show their lack of a clue!

New Courses that exceeded my expectations in 2018:

Pines at Clermont (9) - (NJ) - This imaginative 1999 Vince Orlando design shows that golf can be great fun at 2,200 yards, par 31.

Heritage Links (9) - (NJ) - This imaginative 2001 Mike Gaffney design shows that golf can even still be great fun at 1885 yards, par 30.

Mission Inn (El Campeon) - (FL) - This is Florida?   Rolling hills, great variety, tilted greens and nothing but solid golf.

CommonGround - (CO) - In a perfect world, every town would have a facility like CommonGround.   This understated design is just so, so good.

Franklin Park aka William Devine GC (MA) - In a perfecter world, every town would have a facility like Franklin Park, with Franklin Park's history.   At just over 6,000 yards it's a brilliant study in the effective use of terrain and there were several holes unlike anything that would be built today and more's the pity.

Royal Manchester - (PA) - This Tim Freeland design (2010) is Pennsylvania's public golf's hidden secret gem.   Instantly in my top 10 Public courses in PA and no one knows about it.

Country Club of Maryland - (MD) - Some very cool Herbert Strong greens elevate this low key club that I suspect one could play daily without ever growing bored.

It's a bit crazy to me that I played Moraine, Victoria National, and Northland (MN) for the first time in 2018, and not one of those tops my favorite new course played list.

Instead, that honor goes to Kiawah Ocean Course. Kiawah is where I inadvertently fell in love with the game 16 years ago during a post school-year trip, walking past Turtle Point every day, driving past Cougar Point on excursions to Charleston, and deciding to give golf a chance. On another trip to Kiawah, I would develop a relationship with a woman whom I eventually married and had children with. So yeah, Kiawah Island has a special place in my heart.

Encouraged by my wife to bite the bullet, I finally played the Ocean Course. What I found was a tough, but a very enjoyable and playable golf course. The whole experience was amazing. First tee-time out, perfect weather, wind blowing a bit, but not too hard, and perfect conditioning. It really was everything I thought it would be and more.

As enjoyable as the experience was, would I play rack rate to play it again? That's debatable. I passed on an opportunity to play Chambers Bay because I didn't think it was "worth" it. Yet, I paid more than double that for my round at Kiawah with mandatory caddy. It's all relative, eh?

Other honorable mentions go to The Wilderness at Fortune Bay and Giants Ridge (Quarry). It was a bummer I played those courses after the winter they had in northern Minnesota last year, as the greens were still in recovery mode (even in August); especially at Giants Ridge.

My favorite new course in 2018 was Lawsonia. I knew it would be good, but had no idea it would be so much fun and compelling. I am so looking forward to a return visit.

Other stellar first time visits of note were:

Stoatin Brae
Mammoth Dunes
Sand Valley
The Mines
Fraserburgh
Painswick (Oh my!!!)

The Country Club - Brookline, Mass.

Perfect late June golf weekend, a round at Yale on the way to Mass from NJ.

40 Holes at TCC,staying in the rooms at the club, and eating four meals there.

Great friends, super weather, good caddies, solid play, nice wine and wonderful friends.

As former Gov Kean of NJ would say, TCC and you  ......   perfect together !!  ( Need a special accent for this )

TCC is also my choice.  We had different conditions (late fall after some very substantial rain), but I still liked it much more than I was expecting.

It’s really hard to pick. I think this year I’d go:
1. Royal St. George’s, strictly for golf
2. Rye, best combo of golf and club vibe. I’d like to be a member here
3. Royal Cinque Ports
5. Lawsonia
5. Sand Valley
6. Culver
7. Midpines
8. Mammoth Dunes
9. Dormie Club
10. Royal Ashdown Forest

2018 found me playing less new great courses, but that happens when you’ve played 13 Irish links courses in ‘17.  :)   My favorite new course was the first Gary Player course I’ve liked, the Cliffs at Mountain Park.  I really enjoyed the use of sentinel trees and the Saluda River to keep the importance placing the tee shot in a position that makes entry to the green straightforward.

Royal Manchester is fun, but that routing - woof. Threw something like 6 birdies up there when I played it with Bausch a few years ago. Top 10 seems a bit strong in PA, though!

For me: Crystal Downs.

Of the nine courses I played for the first time this year, White Bear Yacht Club takes the cake for me.  Wild terrain, great variety and incredibly fun throughout.

Honourable mentions: Sand Valley, Interlachen, Quarry at Giants Ridge and Mammoth Dunes.

The best new course that I played was Country Club of Orlando. The Forse/Nagle work is really cool. It's not the longest and/or hardest course you'll play and it's pretty flat (obviously as its in Orlando). However, it has a terrific set of greens (the quasi-punchbowl 9th green is awesome) and is a ton of fun to play. A course that passes the "I could play here every day" test with flying colors.

Glad to hear others enjoyed it as well like Joel & Terry.

Kyle,

I would think RM should get bonus points based on its uncanny ability to identify superior golfers.  ;)

The routing does have that one long, uphill walk through the woods routing glitch from the par three to the par five (which Joe Bausch solved) and it's a bit clunky between nines but overall it's exceptionally walkable and even intimately so through most of the trek.

I enjoyed the heck out of TPC  Colorado.  Plenty of options off the tee and on approach shots.  Would prove to be a very different course from on multiple days/multiple tees.  Plenty of wind the day I played to ramp up the variability.  It was 71 degrees at 4:15 while I played.  12 hrs later it was 29 degrees with 3” snow.
