Pasatiempo was my favorite. Could be the best routed course I have played.

A close second was Silvies Ranch in Seneca Oregon. It's a reversible 36 hole layout built by Dan Hixson.

There are 2 courses the Hankins and Craddock. The layout is not truly reversible as it has a few shared fairways and 27 greens, but the courses do play in opposite directions.
Loved the place.

Playing on sand greens at Bombala close to the NSW/Victoria order. Nice reminder of how much fun simple country golf courses can be.

Mike - what about the routing was special to make it so stand out from others you have played? Thanks!

Mr. Whitaker,

It was the way the good Doctor routed the course around and over the gullies and ravines. Many of the tees are on one side of a gully or ravine and the fairway or green is on the other side. Seems like McKenzie utilized every bit of the property to maximize the length of the course. A few of the Par 3's are designed like this. It's a fairly hilly course but you barely notice when your walking. The houses where built after the course so they didn't influence the routing.

That's my 2 cents

Mike - I had heard that it was a difficult walk, so that is why I was curious about why the routing was special to you.

Are there a lot of forced carries?

John Cowden is trying to get me to come out there to play Pasatiempo. We really
missed you at the Dixie Cup. Could have had a good Pasa chat on the “Seas The Day” porch!  ;D

Whitty,
Pasa is not a bad walk. You wouldn't have any problem.
I don't remember any forced carries except for one short par 3. I guess that's whats cool about it with all of the ravines and gullies they seem to be situated close to the tees so as to not have a a long forced carry .

Not sure if that makes sense or not, there are some spots you have to hit it in the air but not for very far to make the carry.

By the way Mr. Cowden is the Mayor of Pasatiempo if he invited you be sure to take him up on it.

Maybe I could come down an join you, let me know if and when your in town.

Mike - we should resurrect the “Thawout.” Maybe in late January or February? Hell, we should make it an annual event!!!

My ears are burning!   Yes, Pasatiempo is a good walk, and most members (not a particularly young demographic)  do so.  Hell, it’s a 1929 design.  Of course you walk!  As for the routing, Pasatiempo is as good as it gets.  Look around and it’s easy to see that the course fits the land like a perfectly tailored suit, and with tremendous imagination and creativity.  The housing came later, most of it much later given the nation’s economic woes at the time, an economic nightmare that destroyed Marion Hollins’ grand vision and the lovely lady herself.  But what’s this Thaw you speak of?  Pasatiempo enjoys 300+ days of sunshine every year.  Come see for yourselves.

Played Pasa in 2017 and I liked it more than Spyglass certainly. Was fogged in and got a late start as we were originally scheduled for 7 am but at 7:20 we blasted into the foggy abyss.  We get to 9 tee and see an advert for the grill food at the turn and says 4.99 for mushrooms, avocado, etc. toppings for hot dogs.  I say hey hot dogs are 5 bucks loaded who wants one?  We order 3 and 3 gatorades.  Get off the green and go in where my dad pulls out a 20 and a 5 to pay saying he has this.  The lady says $52.  My dad looked puzzled and says $52?  She says yes and he pulls out 2 more 20's.  He gets 10 back so for 55 bucks we had 3 loaded hot dogs and 3 gatorades!

I look at the menu and it says hot dogs 8 bucks so the 4.99 was just for the EXTRA toppings!  13 dollar hot dogs!

We fondly remember this to tease my dad as he was so pissed he couldn't enjoy the rest of the round, despite me paying for the green fees.  :)

Mayor Cowden - I’m going to take you up on your invite before too long!

The “Thawout” is a gathering Eric Smith started a while back centered around Super Bowl weekend. We had it in Pawleys Island one year, headquartered at my beach house. There has been talk of it becoming a yearly event.

Three new courses stood out for me this year, Northland, White Bear Yacht and Lawsonia.  If I had to pick a favourite, it would be Northland by a very narrow margin.
