I’ve been to Las Vegas exactly once, 21 years on spring break in college. I can safely say I have zero interest in going back, regardless of golf options. The city holds nothing of interest to me.

Brian,

With apologies I'm confused. Did you go to Vegas 21 years ago or was it when you were 21? It is vitally important to the content of this thread. Thanks.

Both, it was 21 years ago when I was 21.

As you can read below the Wynn opened in 2005. Thanks for your input. I have to admit it would be fun to be able to go back 21 years to Vegas and see how freaked they were over the impending doom of Y2K.

Well I have to admit that I was trying to figure out what kind of grown man would hate Vegas after only one visit when he was 21. Now I get it. Many of the best times of my life were had at the Wynn and if it had never been built perhaps I would share your view. It's important when discussing a golf course to not only hear from those who have played it but also those who have not and why. Please tell us every chance you get what you haven't done because it is far more interesting than what you have. For instance I have never played Pebble but am making my first trip out to see the course this November. I'm kinda sad at never again being that guy who has a story on why he never played Pebble.

I enjoy the gambling aspects of Vegas, but not much else, so I guess i'm mostly with BHoov on this one....

P.S.  Still wondering what that 45 minutes away course is? Primm Valley perhaps?.

He was talking about Cascata which is where a guy like me would and has played while staying at the Wynn. To play Shadow Creek you need to be at a MGM property which the Wynn is not. Screw Mapquest, Cascata is at least 45 min away.

I need to come to my old friend Jaka's defense here. I'm 39, and have been going to Vegas pretty regularly 2-3 times a year for the past 10 years or so, and before that maybe once every few years.

I bring my clubs to most places when I travel, but I've never brought my clubs to Vegas. In fact, the Wynn Golf Club is the only place I've ever played in Vegas. Wynn is far and away my favorite property in Vegas. In fact, my friends and I have had several trips to the Wynn where we didn't leave the property the entire weekend. With that being said, I fear for the long term future without "Uncle Steve" leading the helm. I too was excited to hear about this "Pleasure Park" which he had envisioned.

As far as the Wynn Golf course goes, though it wouldn't be my every day cup of tea, it really was pretty cool to be able to step out of your room and me at the first tee in the matter of minutes.

Eric,
The Country Club Restaurant unfortunately closed last year, but is being replaced by a Thomas Kellar concept which I'm sure will be great. However, these new "celebrity chef" concepts definitely go against Steve Wynn's old moto of not hiring a chef for his name unless the chef would actually be cooking you the food...alas.

I thought Tom Fazio had retired and Congaree was going to be his last course?
I suspect maybe they are using his name perhaps and he had minimal or no involvement.  I could be wrong but I too thought he had retired.

He just redesigned Forest Creek where he is a part-owner as well?

I heard Tom came out once and Logan maybe twice.

I believe most of the work was done by Tom Marzhoff.

Jason,

Thanks for the info. I’ve stayed there and Encore many times and it will be a bit strange if Steve Wynn isn’t still narrating the television in the suite or the taxi from the airport. His voice was a big reason why his place was so cool. SW Steakhouse is still the best dinner I’ve ever had.

Eric, please tell us about it.  Courses/price or are you comped as a "whale"?  ;)

Ha! No comps for me. As for dinner at SW, the meal of all meals was with my dad eating out on the patio facing the lake of dreams (here is a youtube video of that intoxicatingly strange "show" on the water). I had a perfect tomahawk steak and truffle creamed corn that will make your head spin. Just one of those memories that will stay at the top until the next one. ;)  The sister restaurant next door - Lakeside - is just as amazing but with seafood.

Hey, me too.  We tried to go last year, but the weather was terrible, so we went to a brewery instead.  Hoping for bad weather tomorrow.

Put me in the "Vegas is fun when I'm there, but I have no desire to go back" camp.  I'm notoriously cheap, so I used to like $5 blackjack tables, but I'm not sure those exist anymore.  And my brain can't separate the bet in a poker hand from the opportunity cost.  One "hit" too many at a $10 table (if you can even find one of those) and I just lost lunch on Monday.  I live in a great food city, so I don't need the fancy restaurants, and I'm not really a "hang by the pool" or "go to shows" person.  Last time I was there was for a floor hockey tournament with old friends, and it was surprisingly hard to find a bar where we could just hang out and catch up.

As for golf, I think I've played Wildhorse, which was fine, and Desert Rose, which was not great (it may be the Club at Sunrise, now).

If the pro in Shawshank hadn’t gotten shot I could see him as a caddie at the Wynn picking up a few extra bucks when the occasional Cuck comes to town.

If you can’t find something fun to do in Vegas, one wonders if you ever get out of the house!   Sure, you come back poorer, tired and with Vegas throat, but it’s usually an epic weekend.

My definition of fun does not include spending hours inside a smoke-filled casino. Besides gambling, which holds zero appeal to me, there is nothing else in Vegas I would not rather do elsewhere. But that’s just me.

Well, a lot has changed in 21 years.   I think Vegas has by far more shows on a daily basis than anywhere and probably the best retail in the country.    I believe gaming revenue has long been below 50% for most resorts.     I agree the golf isn't worth the trip alone, but that's due to how much else there is to do.

Jwinick,

If you are defining "best retail" as most expensive than i can certainly agree to that.  I've also seen two shows there, at the insistence of a friend, and it was two over-priced shows too many.

Perhaps if I was a degenerate gambler and not just the occasional one, or enjoyed tacky faux crap architecture, i would enjoy it more...

Degenerate gamblers no longer go to Vegas. They are found in local casinos down by the river. Vegas is just the best place to go to get away from people who don’t like Vegas.

John,

I would agree you don't find them on the Strip as much, but in the old downtown Vegas section.

The Strip is just the adult version of Disneyland, and its probably not coincidence that I did Disneyland once and never felt the need to return either.
