Beau Desert v Queens Course, Gleneagles
« on: October 27, 2018, 09:31:34 AM »
On a recent trip I managed to stop off at Beau Desert on the recommendation of Mr Arble. I'm very glad I did because I was able to play a course with possibly the finest set of greens I've seen on any inland course. A WH Fowler heathland course that until recently had apparently suffered a bit with tree encroachment but due to strong winds and the judicious use of a chainsaw that now seems to be resolved. Certainly, the only hole they were really in play was the one off 12th.

Also a very friendly membership who I suspect don't appreciate quite how good their course is. I got into discussion with one low handicap member who I tagged along with for a few holes who was very familiar and very fond of the courses at Gleneagles of which he nominated the Queens as the best (I didn't disagree). I asked which he preferred, the Queens or Beau Desert. Much to my surprise he went for the Queens course.

It's been a few years since I've played the Queens (which I love) and maybe my memory is fading but I don't remember it being as good as Beau Desert. Indeed does Scotland have an inland course that can compete with BD ? Maybe I was caught off guard not expecting much of BD, and maybe I need to play it again to temper my judgement but it does strike me as being of the highest quality.

What do others think ?

Here is a thread I started a while back highlighting the green complexes at delightful Beau Desert -

As to the Queens course at Gleneagles, I haven’t played there so must leave comment to others

Gleneagles Queens is so beautiful, combined with being very short and funky, and mostly played by people who are on holiday, that I think it's almost an impossible course to be objective about.

The first nine or ten at Beau were shortish and quite funky I thought. Certainly you needed more guile than brawn whereas the back nine was maybe the other way round. At Queens, from what I remember, there was still a bit of hitting to be done.

"a course with possibly the finest set of greens I've seen on any inland course"

Niall -

I recall reading somewhere that some of the contours on some of the greens at Beau Desert are the result of the sudsidence of the land under the course due to the collapse of coal mine shafts deep under the property. I don't know if that is true,

If it is true, Mr. Fowler's design work had some help over the years.

I can't compare BD and Glen Queen's, but I do agree that BD is seriously under-rated.  I hope to see the Queens one day because the Kings is outstanding.  I like the routing a lot and believe the greens are one of the best sets in GB&I.  David is right, coal mining has added interest...most especially to the 15th....which had (believe it or not!) its left side jacked up a bit.  For me, BD is a strong candidate for top 50 GB&I.
