Potters Bar has closed
« on: November 21, 2018, 05:25:43 AM »
Potters Bar GC just off the M25 has closed. Famous for Tony Jacklin taking his first assistants job, and a solid Braid course.

Selling golf at £15 is never going to work, it ran up big debts and was not the landowner so with no meat on the bone they can't pay their way.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

With a four bed house just off the course on the market for £975k the course would be worth a fortune as residential building land.

Duncan how come? If they don’t own the land and the landowner hasn’t renewed a lease the club is screwed.

That isn't normally how leases work, unless the tenant is in arrears with the rent. The accounts suggest that this isn't the case.

The fact that Potters Bar is a CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club) is a complicating factor. If a CASC closes all assets go to the community rather than the members.

Duncan - Accounts are always difficult to read that get sent and posted (abridged) to companies house. I don't have any knowledge of Potters Bar at all, just going by the facebook chat that they don't own the land and the greenkeeping equipment is all leased. Business has been slow and looking at the website it shows deals at £15.

Putting 2 + 2 together it just looks a simple case of not enough money to cover run costs with land/rent/wages to go forward, when you have a 'committee' those individuals have to be confident that what they represent can pay its way.

You can't make a decent golf course work at £15 per round full stop. Selling golf at £15 just undermines the membership position, it might not be totally their fault it is very competitive around the M25, others may have trashed the price to mop up business, sadly the run costs are much more, labour starts at £10 per hour. Sadly lowest price for golf is very important to customers another anti of the GCA think.

If they are CASC then they have to have a FULL membership at about £520 per year. Any club still on CASC that owns its land is completely mad, somewhere like Painswick makes sense, CASC was set up for little 9 holers run by a few helpers.

Convenient site Potters Bar GC. Just off the M25 and with a railway station on the line into central London just down the road.
The club has an interesting social history too, one that reflects some aspects of society many years ago.

PS - I wonder how many other golf clubs there are that are located close to railway stations on lines into central London? I’m sure there are a few that some have their eyes on for future development. Members beware! Or perhaps in some circumstances, members rejoice.
