The Wilds of WESTWARD HO!: 2024-25 Winter Tour
Richard Fisher:
One of the oldest, if not the oldest club matches in the world returns to fabulous RND this week as Oxford University GC plays Cambridge University GC. The last time the Blues Match was played at Westward Ho! Was in 1938 when (in addition to numerous present and future international golfers) Willie Whitelaw, subsequently British Deputy PM and Captain of the R&A and President of Silloth (where he was the MP), was in the Cambridge team: the latter were in the middle of a winning streak which extended from 1934 to 1939. The Oxford Captain in 1938, Kenneth Scott, played for England and was one of the sadly striking number of golf blues to be killed in the Second World War (see Henry Longhurst for more on this).

We should make a plan. I would like to see the course in summer when there is less wind. Once again, three of us could not carry the Cape Bunker. I played right of the bunker and it was clear this is a popular option.
It’s rare for a course to grow on me the way Westward Ho! has. So much subtlety to counterbalance the brazen features.

Good thinking. I’d be up for such.

It is nice to see your opinion change over the years. I would like to get back and see the new holes. As you know, I was an overseas member for many years and grew to love the course, even though the tee shot on 11 was a lost ball on many occasions.
