I am traveling on a Monday from Burlington to Oakmont CC. Is there anywhere to stop worth a try?

The Robert Trent Jones' course at Cornell. The course at Colgate is a good one too.

Scranton!  Great greens.

On the very front end, but Rutland CC is pretty awesome.  Semi-private, probably $90-$100 on a Monday.

I look at it as a mini-Taconic...similar but only 6100y par 70.  Some great holes, the epitome of a hidden gem!

Nobody talks about it, perhaps because of the length, but it's easily in Vermont's top 5, perhaps top 3.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I love how we have fallen into the default response by recommending inquirers play private clubs - Outpost Lite if you will.  Perhaps you know what I don't - that Mr. Malone is a Big Deal.  I see that he's playing at Oakmont so I'm guessing he dines at the adult table at Thanksgiving.

Pettiness and teasing aside, I can say with little reservation that one of my favorite trips included CC of Troy, Teugega, Glens Falls, Yahnandasis and Onandaga.  Just missed on Leatherstocking.   Any one of those is fabulous.  Doak might go with Glens Falls.  As my boy Arble likes to say, I have plenty of time for Troy and Teugega.  There's also a quirky one-shotter and twin punchbowls at Yahnny that alone make the trip there worthwhile.

By the way, I'll be in Clementon, NJ next week.  Any recommendations?

I would try Olgas Diner. Mr. Malone has a table there. He's a noted figure in the Clementon Park circles.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

Lots of good ones mentioned with a nod to Glens Falls and Yahnundasis. I’ll offer up Sunnehanna in Johnstown PA which is a rabid hockey town.

This is funny. I would love a quirky public gem for 25 bucks.

Here's a link to my golf map.  Dunno if guests are allowed to plug in driving directions to see what's on their route, but much of what's worth seeing should be listed on there.  Hope its helpful

Ed,

It’ll be a long wait for service, Olga’s closed about 10 years ago.

Penn Hills located in Bradford,  PA

12 or so very good Travis holes Superb use of  a winding stream on several holes.  Ed Homsey highly recommends this golf course.

Yahundasis is very good.

Thanks, Mark, for that nod to Pennhills Club, in Bradford, PA.  Holes 2 through 10 will knock your socks off, with wonderful Travis greensites that I would stack up against any Travis course listed thus far.  Some fascinating fairway undulations and long-forgotten imprints of Travis's old "mounds with sand pits" hazards.  Another off-the beaten path golf course, easily accessed enroute between Burlington and Oakmont, is Thendara, up in the Adirondacks, and on the way back to civilization, Teugaga and Yahnundasis are a stone-throw away.

Lots of good advice here Mike. We have a camp close to Thendara and I play that a few times a year. Interesting course and lots of fun. Two VERY different nines.

I also think you would like the Yahnundasis. Some really fine holes there and lots of nuance. 15/16/17 don't drain exceptionally well, so if you do go I hope it's not raining.

Short on time? A great 9 hole course is the Sadaquada.

Teugega and Seven Oaks also worth the effort, IMO.

If you go east there is Myopia, the Old Course, Falsterbo, Hirono, Chambers Bay, Lawsonia and Nemacolin (for a rest at the spa), and then Oakmont will just be an Uber away......
