Northern Cali Golf Option

Hey All,

I am heading to San Fran next week and have lined up a round at SF Golf Club on Monday and the Meadow Club on Friday afternoon.  Needless to say I am very excited!

My question to you all is:  If we are looking to play 36 on Friday, what would be a good course to play in the morning with Meadow Club being our afternoon round?  It seems like Meadow Club is not super close to the notables in Northern Cali so I am trying to figure out what course to slot in there for 36. 

If anyone has any suggestions I would be much obliged.     Guessing it will need to be public as the chances of landing an 8-9:00 tee time on a Friday morning at a private club would seem slim.

Meadow is only 20 minutes outside the city, so Harding or Presidio are good or Sharp Park would be another option w/o much driving

Hi Mike:Not sure exactly what your tee time at Meadow would be, but Meadow is pretty remote (45+ mins from SF) and the only public courses nearby are San Geronimo (AV Macan) and Peacock Gap (Forrest Richardson). If you were staying up north you could try to get 9 in at Northwood (some MacKenzie left) but thats 90mins+ north of Meadow Club.While the others are nice courses, the quality gap between them and Meadow/SFGC is absolutely huge, so you may just want to enjoy the morning in Marin (maybe have a nice seaside breakfast in Sausalito) and be fully rested to play Meadow...but for convenience sake, San Geronimo would be the easiest if you really want to play 36...have fun

Getting to play SFGC and the Meadow Club is a real treat. Consider yourself fortunate to get to play at both.

I would highly recommend playing San Geronimo on Friday. For starters it is the closest course to Meadow. It is also a course with some interesting green complexes and a very good routing (aside from the 9th hole).

There are a number of blind shots, so it would be worth picking up a course guide if they have them available. This late in the summer season, it will likely be playing quite firm.

P.S. I took a well-traveled golfer to San Geronimo last month. He gave it a solid thumbs up.

I'd stay rested for Meadow it's such an exceptional experience. With SF traffic patterns you want to leave yourself plenty of time to get to either course.

If you enjoy some quirk and scenery, Mill Valley Golf Club is a fun nine hole adventure not far from Meadow Club. Warning: you have to hit off mats on like half of the holes but there are some wild holes out there!

Thanks everyone for the replies.  We definitely know how lucky we are to play those two courses.

Sounds like either rest or San Geronimo are the best options.   I think the guys in my group will likely want to play 36 though as that gets us out of our conference that day.   

I look forward to reporting back on the trip!

Good to hear about Mill Valley!  It was my home club when I lived in Sausalito in the late 70's, and in my first trip to Scotland a letter from the club secretary was enough to get me on Muirfield.  I'd add funky to quirky and scenic of which all are at the 8th with the severe front to back green.

20 minutes...  maybe at 3:00 AM with a police escort...   :)

Presidio is a good suggestion.  Also up in Novato is Marin Country Club, a sporty, under-the-radar club that is always in fantastic condition.

Mike,

San Geronimo or Mill Valley are both good options (I've been doing pro bono consulting with both).  San G is the best pubic access golf in Marin and also closest to Meadow Club.  Not sure what your start time at Meadow is but I'd recommend morning golf at San Geronimo, lunch in Fairfax (let me know if you need recommendations), and then you'll only have a 10 minute drive up the hill to get to Meadow.

If you cant get on San Geronimo then Indian Valley Golf Club in Novato is about 15 miles from the Meadow Club. Pretty public course tucked in a valley.

Tim,

Indian Valley may be 15 miles from Meadow Club as the crow flies, but not as the road turns.  Either way you go -- highway route or scenic route -- it's a 45 minute drive.  Mill Valley is the same.  Other than San G, Peacock Gap is the closest drive to Meadow, and not nearly as interesting a golf course.

San G is about 20 mins away and Indian Valley is about 40 mins away.


Also in the 40 minute range from Meadow Club (depending on traffic), across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, are Richmond CC and Berkeley CC (f/k/a Mira Vista CC). Haven't played either in a couple years, but BCC is a ton of fun after it's Forrest Richardson/Mark Fine redo. Based on my last play 6 years ago, i would heartily recommend it among this group.
