North Palm Beach CC Renovation
« on: September 09, 2018, 10:05:02 AM »
The North Palm Beach CC has been closed all season due to a major renovation.  Does anyone know the reasons the course closed to re-grass?  I always thought the course was one of the better ones in the area in terms of conditioning, and drainage never really seemed to be an issue there. Also, while the greens haven’t been as fast in recent years, they seemed like reasonable speeds given the slopes.

I drove by yesterday and it’s still pretty torn up. Their website says it will re-open in December. Just curious if anyone has any info, I didn’t find anything via the search function, thanks.

So bad it's good!

Complete regrass to Latitude 36. New greens, bunkers. There are about 4 GOOD weeks to grow grass left, then 3-4 weeks where the turf is still moving a bit. We don't grow much past mid October. It's all maintenance after Nov 1st.

Didn't Jack Nicklaus just remodel the course 10 years ago? I enjoyed the place even if the greens were overcooked. What was the justification for a remodel?

Yes-2006. The fairway turf was really contaminated & deteriorated. Severe nematode issues and lack of finances to properly care for the course added to it's demise. I've encouraged them to increase they budget number if they expect the Latitude 36 to look like and play like all the courses they visited last winter. It's a boutique grass. Id be concerned that it can handle the rounds they do in the winter months.
They are also pump A TON of money into a new clubhouse. Completely tore down the old one. It's 3 miles from my house, so when the baby cant sleep we go down the street and ride through the community surrounding the course.

Word has it that it was too difficult for the clientele.

The original RFP has  Celebration as the choice for Fairway grass. Why the change? How many clubs use Latitude36 ?

Are you sure? That would have made them one of the first, if not the first around here. They were also looking into Celebration vs Latitude during their decision process. I don't think that they would have ben discussion/testing it if they already had it in place.  I think it was planted with 419 and was heavily contaminated.

We have L36, along with Loxahatchee, Banyon Cay, Par 3 course at Bear's Club, Boca Rio and Red Stick. It is currently be planted at Emerald Dunes and Hunters Run, along with Edisto CC and Pelican GC near Tampa.

Here is the original RFP:

RE‐GRASSING ‐ The Owner will spray and kill all of the turf.  They will prep all remaining areas outside the Vendor’s scope of work for no‐till sprigging. ‐ The Owner will purchase and apply all necessary pre‐plant amendments. ‐ All areas shall then be sprigged with Celebration.

My bad. When I read "original", I was thinking when the course was being grassed after the Nicklaus renovation on 2006.

I do know for a fact they are grassing with Latitude 36, not Celebration.

I’m curious why all you guys choose latitude?  After reviewing the ntep trials there seems to be significantly better choices?  But of course ntep trials are usually for turf quality factors and not playability or just overall first impression aesthetics.  Having never used or seen this grass I’m wondering why it’s so popular?  Thanks!!

There is certainly not a lot of it in FL and I don't put much value in NTEP trials. (Mind you, NTEP rated Mini verde the #1 ultradwarft.....) As stated above, I think there are only 8 courses, currently. Celebration is still vastly more popular.
L36 is the closest Bermuda grass I have seen to bent, and that our members saying it. The turf grows very upright, ball sits up very well at all heights. We've seen rough at 4" and have mowed it below .100". Certainly does not need the cultural practices that Celebration does. Divot patterns are small and don't "explode" like Celebration. Having grown both Celebration, 419 and L36, the Latitude is a boutique grass, in my opinion though, but its a superior grass to the other 2 on so many levels.

I was really impressed with the firmness of the Lat 36 fairways at Banyan Cay when I played it in January. If it can bring more ground-game potential to FL courses, that's great news.

Hopefully not too much character is taken out of those NPBCC greens. They remind me of Lay's potato chips.
