I hosted G. Childs and M. Sweeney earlier in the season and things were not good at that time; the course left them with an empty feeling.

Respectfully I disagree with my friend Dr Gene. The greens early in the season were fine for early season greens. Any letdown was only a result of the Southsiders consumed earlier in the day. I have never played the Shinnecock - National combination in one day, and it frankly might overload my senses. Thus, Southampton as the second round of the day is perfect for me on that rare occasion that I get a free pass for the entire day.
I have heard from others that the greens were bad later this year, a shock to me as Southampton, specifically the greens, are always in great shape despite the amount of play it gets.
Holes 3 and 4 can stand up with its neighbors in term of back to back long tough Par 4's. 7 is a good Redan that probably needs some Bahtoization. 10 is a medium par 3 with a great green, and 11 is a very good short 4, dogleg left. 15 has one of the great driving hills out East. Make it to the top, and play a higher iron to the green, no make the hill, and you are stuck with a blind long iron.
Very nice course, better membership and a bar area which would easily make my top 15 due to its frequent use
