I was at the Open last week and popped in on Friday evening to see TOC and watch the seniors. I don't know if the course was prepped, but it was pristine. Like almost all of the courses that I saw over there, the greens were watered much more than the rest of the course. But TOC had that carpet like fairway (but still with a nice tinge of brown) that Carnoustie and the others did not have. The rest of the courses were pretty burnt out from tee to the start of the greens.
I was very surprised at how low key the event was in general. I walked on the course at about 6PM and it was a lovely 70 degrees with a very light breeze. There was nobody out there. Even the fairway crossing guards were vacant at many locations and we just had to sort of jaywalk across between groups. We walked the whole course and then followed Daly and Lehman for a few and then Watson, Jimenez, and Langer from 15-18. The majority of the people were watching that group, but it was still only a few dozen and you could stand at the rope right in front of them every shot.
Overall, it was really enjoyable and relaxing. The Open was great fun and all, but there is a different kind of enjoyment that you get from being able to walk along with a group to see how they manage their ball. It is more like you're playing a round of golf yourself.
