I’ll probably turn it on at some point this weekend.

BHoover -

I meant in person. :) I have changed the thread heading.

Given all the discussion about the experience of attending the Open at Carnoustie, my guess is the Senior Open would be a much lower key affair and afford a good chance to see TOC up close.

I’m here all week, practice was low key today but I think the crowds will be good tomorrow. Unfortunately TOC is pretty awful for viewing in person, Carnoustie with the extra spectator mounding was excellent.

Has the course been noticeably prepared for the tournament?

The Dunvegan has honored our friend Bill McBride by placing his Balvenie Doublewood canister in their prized “Very Old/Rare” section of single malts.

If you have the opportunity to visit the Dunvegan please be sure to make a Balvenie Doublewood toast to Bill and take a photo to post here.

I have a buddy playing in the event, I asked that he give him a nod hello.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

Not one thing looks much different than it appeared when I last played it in 2014.
Greens were less green than Carnoustie, fairways very firm and fast, not quite as baked as Carnoustie and surrounds an average of the two.
All firm though, but not visibly stressed like an irrigationless course would be.Perfect weather for a course with irrigation and the sense to control how often it's used.

We’ll possibly drive over in the morning. Hope it’s cheaper than the Open!

May go along on Sunday
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I was at the Open last week and popped in on Friday evening to see TOC and watch the seniors.  I don't know if the course was prepped, but it was pristine.  Like almost all of the courses that I saw over there, the greens were watered much more than the rest of the course.  But TOC had that carpet like fairway (but still with a nice tinge of brown) that Carnoustie and the others did not have.  The rest of the courses were pretty burnt out from tee to the start of the greens.

I was very surprised at how low key the event was in general.  I walked on the course at about 6PM and it was a lovely 70 degrees with a very light breeze.  There was nobody out there.  Even the fairway crossing guards were vacant at many locations and we just had to sort of jaywalk across between groups.  We walked the whole course and then followed Daly and Lehman for a few and then Watson, Jimenez, and Langer from 15-18.  The majority of the people were watching that group, but it was still only a few dozen and you could stand at the rope right in front of them every shot.

Overall, it was really enjoyable and relaxing.  The Open was great fun and all, but there is a different kind of enjoyment that you get from being able to walk along with a group to see how they manage their ball.  It is more like you're playing a round of golf yourself.

Peter,

From what I can gather from the TV coverage, low key is what i'm picking up on too...and I'm loving it.  And its far more interesting watching these guys interface the course and trouble and not bombing over all of it.

P.S.  Tom Watson called TOC the TOL...The Old Lady.  Is that a common moniker for the course?

The course wasn’t prepped at all, they’ve been saying for weeks the course is perfect and could hold an Open tomorrow.

Crowds were disappointing I think as a result of the Scottish Open and the Open all being held within the St Andrews catchment area over the past two weeks.

Been here since April and never heard the course referred to as anything other than the Old.

Which was better TV?

I really hope they bring the Senior Open back to St. Andrews soon

and Bryson D. needs to be punched-I said that Sunday morning BEFORE his well publicized post round brushoff of McEvoy-he at least apologized afterward but acted like a spoiled insufferable douche ALL day the last two rounds.

Agreed - the good thing is that this is likely the last time that we will see Glen Abbey.  Next year the event is at Hamilton which is a Colt course, albeit altered.

As mentioned above, the gallery at St Andrews was disappointing but the weather was poor on Sunday.  And the Ladies Scottish was going on at Gullane at the same time.

It seemed from my two hours of viewing that the course played perfectly.  The length was about what it should be for that field and the course asked the same questions of players that it has traditionally asked.

Wayne, Jeff -
I'm a bumpkin when it comes to quality gca, but it surprises me that knowledgeable raters-of-the-past ever ranked courses like Glenn Abbey or Angus Glen North/South so highly. I played all three courses back in the day (once each) and even then thought: these 'well maintained designs' commit the most grievous sin of all ie they're dull.

when I was following the Watson/Langer/Jimenez group on Friday, the one thing that really stood out to me was the "stage presence" of Langer and Jimenez.  They looked like the 2 most serious golfers I've ever seen.  Jimenez was like a Matador and Langer was like a surgeon at work.  Meanwhile Watson appeared to be very different.  There was a beautiful sunset and while they were waiting for an approach shot, he was just sort of staring over and admiring it while they others were in conference with their caddies.  The impression that I got was that he was a man who had already conquered all and was in this for the nostalgia more than anything.

The course was played pretty long at 7200yds, lots of rescues hit into 16 in the breeze.

Jimenez looked really relaxed all week, on Wednesday his young son (?) hit a superb approach to the 18th from around 60 yards.

The crowds were low all week, even during the good weather. I’d say if it’s there again it should be after a Troon or English Open not Muirfield or Carnoustie.
