The Greatest Championship
« on: July 21, 2018, 07:16:15 AM »
In their hearts everyone knows The Open is the Championship of championships.  Why?

1. Rock up on the day and buy tickets.

2. Kids  under 16 free if accompanied by an adult.

3. Youth tickets discounted for those 16-24.

4. And a fairly new concept...https://www.theopen.com/Spectators/Camping

Those under 25 can stay for FREE if they have a ticket.  Adults are £40 per night.  Brilliant idea.

Any other reasons why The Open is the greatest?

I believe that when Sandy Lyle won the TPC at Sawgrass he was asked what’s the difference between winning the TPC and winning The Open and he replied something like “about 100 years!”.

Never heard of the camping... really cool idea to get young people to think of the golf tourney as an experience if you can make it more like an event.  Well done.  I think we will see this copied in the future by other venues.

This is a championship that has been won by all of the great golfers for 150 years, including YTM, OTM, Willie Park Sr and Jr, Braid, Jones, Hagen, Sarazen, Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods, etc.  Pretty much every great golfer ever has his name on the Claret Jug - except perhaps Byron Nelson.

Most knowledgeable and respectful galleries. An absence of morons shouting mashed potato.

Golf courses where Mother Nature rather than beurocrats dictate the winning score.

Best methods of player qualification.

The simplest yet best presentation ceremony.

The last few years if anything the gulf has become wider and after Portrush next year, will be wider still.

It's the world's greatest golfers playing golf in its most natural, most creative and purest form.  There is nothing contrived or manufactured about The Open.

I will say the R&A lucked out this week.  Those fairways are incredibly narrow and if it weren't for the dry weather.....

Yeah, they luck out most years.......

The fact none of us know the name of the championship chairman and they have no need to give a press conference at the end of each day’s play is another reason.

couldn’t agree more! This is about the golfers not the guy who sets the course up and wants the limelight!!! Also the lack of shouting and abuse from the crowd is refreshing.

Yes, what others have said.
Also: I love that, in mid July, fans and golfers alike might dress in shirt-sleeves on Thursday, sweaters on Friday, sweaters and rain jackets on Saturday, and shirt sleeves again on Sunday... and that the golf course (and the golf) changes like that too. No better weather, anywhere, for the quintessentially outdoor game than in Scotland.

Ally, is that just for the Irish edition?

As others have eluded to, it is an interesting comparison between the US Open and The Open. Both played out on similar style courses with similar weather leading up and during the competition. Yet, the USGA managed to cock it up in spectacular fashion turning the US Open into a farce all in the lost the plot concept of protecting par.

In contrast, The Open looks like being another great event this year as it usually is. Should the USGA not step back from rules making and let the R&A be the sole responsible body? and if they asked nicely maybe the R&A would run the US Open as well :o :D ;)

Jeff campping started at Royal Troon.

Ally next year is in Ulster.  ;)

I’d disagree on qualifying, too many overseas unknowns now get in at the expense of local qualify.

To do with demand, Mark. Got to remember The Irish Open had 130,000 people when it was at Portrush. 20% of tickets for next year just sold in the first two days.

Jon - don’t know but they expect next year to be the first sell out in the championship’s history. Whether they continue the following years we’ll have to wait and see.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who finds this major championship much more satisfying than the previous two majors.  Course conditions are perfect this year, with the fescue dry and playable.

agreed with all the statements above-though I miss the old style qualifying.
yes the field is stronger the way they do it now(and perhaps more fitting of THE Open), but a bit of the romance is gone-though they still do have 12 spots filled via regional and local qualifying
Most everything else they do is perfect though so no complaints.

Most frustrating though that none of the air bnb's I've stayed at the last few years have SKY and the pubs and clubhouses are stifling stuffy hot to watch in.
Today I lasted 3 minutes before I had to go out to the wonderful breezy cool air outside which they seem determined not to let in via a window or open door..
BBC runs a nice highlight show though.

I've never missed the final back nine of the Masters because I chose to golf instead. Today we are going to complete our front nine and evaluate if we want to take a two hour break to watch the conclusion of the Open. We tee off the same time as the leaders. We are slow, I get it. This simply does not compare to the excitement of Masters Sunday.

How often do you play golf late in the afternoon on a Sunday vs in the morning?
