OB on 18 at Carnoustie
« on: July 19, 2018, 11:12:33 PM »
That OB left of the green...is it actually the boundary of the property? It looks like there's grass left of it. I'm just curious of it's marked OB by tradition or because it's actually the end of the property.

It's the edge of the property up near the green; public walkway, carpark, road, houses in that order as you go left

The Burnside course is halfway down the 18th of the Championship and it has its own clubhouse.

The OOB to the left of the green has always been there since i first went in mid 1990s. It is quite far away from the green edge and did not really come into play in the wet conditions of 1999 and 2007. As it is dry it is now a lot closer.

From memory in the mid 1990s it was a large putting green just left of the 18th green by the boundary.

Another topic should be on the 3rd hole as it has been a different hole in 1999, 2007 and 2018.

Gentlemen,

As Ben suggests that area was and still is a large putting green.
I have forgotten but I think it is a pay as you go green rather than a practice green for Carnoustie and /or Burnside links.

Based on the overheads from 2007 and 2018, I don't see any significant changes on the 3rd.  Am I missing something?

If you see the pair of bunkers in the middle of the fairway on the 3rd. In 2007 the first bunker was to the right of the second bunker and the right of those bunkers was rough and uneven area. Mackenzie and Ebert reworked on this in the last few years moving the first bunker to the left of the second bunker and created a fairway area to the right for the 2018 Open to replace the rough area created by Hawtree for 2007 Open

The 1999 version was completely different with bunkers on the left hand side which 3 of them was remove and the fairway extended to the left to bring Jockie's Burn into play.

Its a great place to have a pay as you go putting green right by the 18th green where the best players have played.
