Chambers Bay Update?
« on: August 01, 2018, 07:03:23 PM »
Has anyone heard how the greens are doing at Chambers Bay? I was fortunate to be able to play this course 8 times over the last couple of years as my son-in-law was stationed at nearby Ft. Lewis. I found Chambers Bay to be fun to play even though the greens were terrible. As I was playing, I found it interesting that you knew that this course was completely manufactured, but it was manufactured in a way that it seemed like everything fit together very well. Also, I thought that there was a good amount of variety in the look and in the shots that were needed to get around the course.  If they ever figure out the greens, I believe that Chambers Bay would be very good. Anyway, If anyone has any thoughts on the course or has any updates on the greens, I thank you in advance.

Heard on the radio a few weeks ago that they are in the process of converting all the greens to Poa.

That's correct. The course will “likely to close for about five months starting in October to complete the conversion from mostly fescue greens to poa annua greens.”

Thanks! Hopefully the course will still play firm and fast with Poa. :-\

To add to this, they already tested and transferred 2 or 3 of the greens to poa and it went EXTREMELY well, hence the shutdown of the course for 5 months starting in October to transfer them over without having to deal with play. They are all in on it.

Considering there is still sand underneath, seeing how firm Pebble or Torrey can play with poa greens, and how well it was received, I'm thinking it will still play firm!

The USGA and Chambers Bay agreed to move the 2019 Four Ball to Bandon in order to get this done. Let's hope for a great 2021 Four Ball!
