Courses in SA
« on: October 17, 2003, 03:54:25 AM »
I am off to South Africa in a few weeks - mainly to visit relatives and spot some wildlife 8). However can’t help bringing my clubs (occupational hazard ;D) so the question is, which courses are absolutely worth visiting?

I know that C. H. Alison did quite a few courses down there – and South Africa is mentioned in Tom D’s Confidential but I would like your comments.

Caroline- Perhaps some further information on your preferences will assist anyone who may be able to help.

Your term "absolutely worth visiting" may mean different things to different people.

If you list some of your personal favorite courses and can include why you prefer them, that would aid greatly.

I am a GC-architect and my favourite course so fare is - very surprisingly - Dornoch. Since I am also the course coordinator of the Diploma Course in Golf Course Design at Edinburgh College of Art I am interested in historical courses, quality course (construction & layout etc.) courses that represents a particular “local design style”, or any course that has interesting or alternative features etc. Any suggestions? ;)

Caroline,

Go to Search and you will find some stuff posted within the past month.

As I pointed out, SA is a big place, depends where you are going.

South Africa or not, I am interested in knowing why Dornoch, as you r favorite course, would be a surprise.  Relatively short with a load of strategy would make me think Dornoch a perfect course from a woman's perspective.

Also, with Jan Stephenson in the news, what do you see as the future for women architects?

Have a great trip!

Cos

I was trying to be ironic about Dornoch - it is not a surprise, if that did not come across it is properly due to the fact that English is my second languish.

I will no go into detail about why Dornoch is my favourite course since it would be too long a story - but you can be sure that it has very little to do with the relationship between me being a woman :-* and the length of the course. In that case most men should find it too short to bother much – but that does not seem to be the case.

Anyway I ought to tell you that my average drive is around 240 y (when the driver is allowed out of the bag) so I do not always play from the front tee (In case my English let me down again I just want to let you know that I am not trying to show of here ;)).

Well about women and GCA – another long story (see Paul Daley’s Book Architecture). There is room for us out there but I don’t believe that the number of female architects will come to reflect the number of female golfers - it is too tough a business, with too many technical details, and too many male developers to ever happen (if I wrong on this one that’s ok).

About SA I will be in the Johannesburg area but might also make it to Cape Town.

Caroline,

If you are mostly in Johannesburg the The River Club and Royal Johannesburg are probably your best choices.

Durban is only about 400 miles south, fly down and play Durban Country Club, quite possibly the best course in SA.

I think there is a course down there called the "Links" -- (yawn) built by Gary Player which it supoosed to be nice.

Outside Johannesburg I believe.

How about Royal Johannesburg. It is featured in The World Atlas of Golf, as is Durban C.C. in Cape Town. These are probably the two best in the country.

I can remember being in SA years ago before I knew much about golf (thats debateable now too...). There is so much magnificent coastline there that it isn't funny. There could be so many great courses built there if there was an infrastructure to support them.

Does any one know anything about Leopard Creek? I'm not sure if it ia a private or public course, but I recall reading about it in Businessweek I think. Has anyone seen it?

Having visited Africa a few years ago, I can only imagine that it mught be pretty dangerous playing in some courses outside of the main metropolitan areas, and I think this is one of those courses.

They are trying to make Leopard Creek the Augusta National of SA.  Wayne Huzienga had a bunch of his buddys join as well as Jack Nicklaus.

Sounds like a terrible idea to me. Who on earth is going to travel all that way on a regular basis?

JNC-Lyon,

With respect, I must correct you. The Durban C.C. is in Durban, Kwa-Zulu, which is many hundreds of miles north east of Cape Town
