Best Features at Cabot Links, Cliffs

Making my first trip to Cabot in 2 weeks. 


Any observations on specific features to look out for?  I am always curious to have people’s thoughts on how to interpret the architecture on a first trip around.  I’m going to play 4 rounds on each course over 4 days. 


Prevailing winds?  Sides of holes to favor?  Favorite greens?

I could write for days about the Cliffs.  Enjoy your time up there.  Cliffs is my favorite golf course.  Possibly my favorite feature on the course is a 50-60 yard spine that runs down the middle of the par 5 7th hole.  You have a tee shot to an angled fairway.  The more you take on the longer carry and fairway bunker, the better chance you have of staying to the right of the spine.  If you stay right of the spine you get a view of the green and a chance to go for the green in two.  If you take the easy route to the left side of the wide fairway, you will be on the left side of the spine.  From there, you have a blind second shot.  That is just a taste of what lies ahead for you on the INLAND holes!  The cliff top holes unbelievable, too!

Both courses have neat par fives, which are often throwaway holes at many courses.


My favorite Cliffs hole was #15, the wild downhill par five.  Had trouble getting my head around #16 and #17...they sit in an all world setting for sure, but playing characteristics are a touch funky...and I never hit a ball in the ocean!


On Links, I had the most trouble with #3...you must flight your ball well to hold the fairway, and the green is no picnic either.  Rather frightening for a potentially-drivable par four.  My favorite holes on Links were in the middle  #6 to #13 are all pretty darn cool!


DO NOT MISS a trip to Glenora Distillery...the only official whisky distillery in North America...they have great whisky, great food and live music during most lunches and dinners...only 10-15 minutes south of Inverness.

After three trips to Cabot, the one big theme I most appreciate is how both courses deftly move through incredible varieties of land.

Cabot Links is more subtle in this regard but still offers a wonderful sequence of settings: grassy headland, village outskirts, a working harbor, the yawning beach, and a return to the clubhouse with a thrillingly integrated 18th green. No matter the time of day, you'll have an engaged gallery of people watching from the restaurants and the apres deck.

Cabot Cliffs ups the ante, moving through true linksland, forest enclaves, wetlands and of course including multiple flirtations with the high cliff edge. All of this while never becoming overwhelming or disorienting. Not an easy trick.
