I'm feeling the tide change this morning and it scares the hell out of me. For the many of us who need to stay connected to work and family perhaps clubs can institute flip phone only rules on site. The Fall is the best time to play but sadly it is also the start of the NFL season. Golf will not win that battle.


I was at a club yesterday and we conservatively concluded that 30% of all golfers are degenerate gamblers. In all seriousness, how many billions of dollars of recreational monies can golf lose to gaming before more clubs close?

As one who has lived most of the past 30 years in the UK, where for most of that time, sports betting has been legal and rife amongst the male half of the population, and the only two positive things I can conjure up from this new SCOTUS ruling is:


1.  Bettors with more money than sense will spend more and more time and capital in losing both of these assets, thus hurtling themselves and their genomes towards Darwin Award oblivion, and;


2.  It will give men with nothing to offer and nothing to say a default option to ignore most women who spend 90+% of their free time texting trivia to "friends" which makes both of those cohorts unlikely to mate and thus also pay homage to Darwin.

I think the majority of people in the US who you could call degenerate gamblers (i.e., the kind of people who are checking lines regularly and not people who might casually place bets here and there) already gambled to their heart's content via illegal bookies or off-shore Internet sites. I know several people who gamble on sports regularly (I am not one of them) with no problem despite the federal ban.


This doesn't seem likely to change much of anything for the vast majority of people (will hurt those illegal bookies, though!).

Not that long ago it was rare to hear music coming from a nearby group. Annoying but not something that slowed down the game. Soon we will hear and see football games being watched. The visual nature of sporting events will slow the game down.


I got a little sick this morning thinking about how I need to get rid of my smart phone before it either ends or destroys my life as I know it. The one saving grace that may save me personally is my fears of privacy issues. I doubt any self respecting gambler wants the government to have a record of their betting history. We are just a few short years from A.I. knowing how to explore our deepest fears, wants and needs. Wait for it...comps sent to your phone based on your betting history fulfilling every vice you enjoy or googled.

Rich - I echo this comment as it relates to riverboat gambling. When the first few debuted here it was supposed to spell the end of Las Vegas. Vegas is bigger than ever and now we have at least 7 casinos here in St. Louis now (and not floating on the river as originally legislated). Just more people pissing their money away in the chase for a few moments of distraction and happiness

But that is the thing. I don't sports bet. Though I am weak and in that it is not a stretch to think the rest of the world is like me. Once you put temptation in your pocket the die is cast.


This weekend I was in a Walmart parking lot listening to the Preakness. There is only one thing worse than sitting in a Walmart parking lot listening to a horse race where you don't have a bet placed....I don't want to be that guy.


ie: The guy sitting in a Walmart parking lot with his windows rolled up screaming for his horse to finish strong.
