Most Popular GCA.com Course
« on: May 15, 2018, 04:58:47 PM »
This certainly is not a knowable fact, but it would be fun and interesting to know which course the greatest number of GCAers, including lurkers, have played.

Bandon?
TOC?
Pebble?
Pinehurst 2?

Well, the title and your opening question may represent two different things - favorite vs. played most by participants.
What course has been played the most might be quite different than what the average gca. com participant would call their favorites.

I have played all four of your suggestions, and all but Bandon courses on multiple occasions.  In fact, depending on list, I have played at least 75 of the world top 100, but most only once each.

As to my favorites (and I think I will start a trend here for not being able to narrow it down to 1) would be

Royal Melbourne Composite
San Francisco
Seminole (pre-latest bunker work, since its been a while)

You will notice similarities, which IMHO are stout and attractive bunkering, and few water hazards, if that tells you anything about WHY I like those courses.

And lastly, to tie to a few weeks old thread, for any golfer living the golf life to the fullest, the only correct answer on "favorite course" is "the next one I play."

As to which course has been played by the most GCA people, it has to be TOC or Pebble--depending on the nationality make-up of the posters.

I realize that neither Subject Line nor OP were clear, but do appreciate the responses. I did mean what Jim said: if every GCAer listed every course that he or she has played, which course would have the most plays?

Must be some popular publicly accessible course like BPB, PB, PH2, PD, TOC, etc.

Pine Needles/Mid Pines
Jay & et al,
Might add Tobacco Road..... all 3 accessible & close by, though upscale a bit, they do not break the bank.  Interesting combination of design and challenge

I have played all four venues. TOC only once, Pebble twice, Bandon courses twice and Pinehurst six times. If asked which venue I would leap to play again it would have to be Bandon. Hard to get to for most of us but infinitely fun.

I would like to think it is something like Lawsonia, Wild Horse, Common Ground, Sweetens or Rustic Canyon.

I'm guessing it would be Pebble, with Bandon a close second.  What is our percentage of members who are "across the pond?"  I am guessing a lot of us in the States would LOVE to play TOC, but have simply not found the time to make that trek.  And vice versa, of course, with Pebble or Bandon.

I think a few years ago this was true, sadly the California contingent has taken their ball and gone home.

The only course mentioned on this thread that I've played is Mid Pines (and maybe Pine Needles... I honestly can't remember if I played there once 10-15 years ago or not).

I'm hopefully playing Sweetens Cove sometime in the next month or two, though.

My guesses of the courses that most GCA.com participants have played are (by region):

US Northeast - Bethpage Black
US Southeast - Caledonia or  Worldwoods Pine Barrens
US Southwest - Troon North (either)  or We-ko-pa Saguaro
US Midwest - Whistling Straits
US West - Rustic Canyon
US Northwest - Pacific Dunes
Scotland - TOC
Ireland - Ballybunion
Northern Ireland - RCD
England - This is the hardest to figure... Royal St Georges, Sunningdale Old, Woking???
Wales - Royal Porthcawl
