Rare golf feats...numbers...and stories
« on: May 11, 2018, 10:48:49 PM »
This week I achieved a golf goal I never thought was possible, even for the pros. I know I have seen others make back to back eagles in scenario 1 - 3 on a par 5 and then 2 on a par 4. What about making a 2 on par 4 repeated by 2 on a par 4?

What group keeps track of stats like this either on tour or for the general public?

What are the odds of such a feat?

What would the odds be of such a feat on holes 1 and 2 of your round?

Yes. I did this on the first two holes of my round. Almost walked off the course and quit but finished 35 44 79.

Great story. You have to be thinking course record after that start.

I witnessed a friend do something similar, except that it wasn't btb par 4s.

He aced a 200+ yard par 3.  Then, on the very next hole, he holed out his 3rd shot into a par 5.  In my memory, it was a short, but full shot.  Maybe 90 yards.  It wasn't the 1st and 2nd hole on the course, but it was early in the round and also got him to 4 under before reality set in.

Well done Justin... I know I’ve said this many times and although it wasn’t the opening two holes, I’ve managed the same at The Old Course (9 & 10) which made it all the more special. Also did it at 18, 1 at North Berwick on a 36 hole day.

Has to be a rare feat and something I’m quite sure I won’t repeat again. Perhaps you will...

My local course in Scotland (Aberdour) starts with two par-3s.  About 20 years ago in a medal a member (not me) started 1, 1.

At a course I play in Fla, there is a 200 yard par three with a little plaque by the tee for two guys who, playing together, both made a hole in one.   Mind boggling....

Justin:

Not sure if you know the story about Woodie Platt's start at Pine Valley many many years ago.
He played the first four holes in 6 under: birdie - eagle (2) - ace - birdie.

The story is that he then stopped in the clubhouse (it is right next to the 5th tee box), and did not come back out until after dark.

The famous UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden, is one of the few people in history to have a double eagle, albatross and a hole in one during the same round!  According to him he wasn't even that good of a golfer and never had either one before or after. Amazing athlete and coach. RIP Coach.

I birdied 7-9 at Kingsley and didn't have the tee on 10.

When I was a member at the CC of Woodmore outside DC I had two eagles ion a row. I played the back nine first and hit the green in two on the par five 18th and made the putt. On number one I hit a decent drive the proceeded to hole out my five iron. Went downhill from there.

I am the only one I know who has made two double eagles (albatrosses). One with a drive and two iron when I was 16 and the second at French Creek in Florida when I was somewhere in my forties. That one was driver driver.

Robert Taylor had holes-in-one over three consecutive days on Brancaster's 16th hole. 1 for 1 in practice, 2 for 4 in competition.

Golfwise, the best I've done is use the same club (Hogan utility) on three different courses in consecutive rounds to set up three eagles, all putts within 2 feet, within 5 days.

Ruleswise, I may have a world record. Lying one(S1), having grounded the club behind the ball, I started to swing, the ball started moving (P1), hit the ball (S2), double hit the ball (P2), driving it into the bank, the ball rebounded, hitting me (P3&4) and rolling downhill to finish stone unplayable (P4) between roots against the trunk

A member of Glen Flora (in IL) eagled every hole on the course.  He was a strong player and was a member there his whole life.  I believe that he checked off the final one on a tough par 3 when he was in his 70s.

In my late teens I holed a wedge from 100 yards out on the 360 yards 6th at Rolling Hills CC and then drove the ball to 3 feet on the uphill 290 yards 7th with my Powebilt Citation driver and made the putt for consecutive 2's. It was the only time I drove that green in hundreds of rounds and my only eagle on either hole.

I won a bad beat jackpot at a casino and had a hole in one within a 12 hour time span. In Indiana, in January.

Sam Snead had 42 holes in one, including at least one with every club in his bag (save the putter). One of them was with a three iron, swung with only his left hand. All 42 were witnessed and attested.  Verified in Chris Rodell's book on holes in one.

I have also heard that he made eagle or better on every hole on both the upper and lower Cascades courses over his lifetime.

There was a man who has long since passed on named Bud Hess. One day at Ukiah Golf Course, Mr. Hess made a hole in one. Later that day, he bowled a 300. He was a very nice man.

My friend and web.com player, Jimmy Gunn, told me that according to an official, he is the only player to eagle a par 3, par 4, and par 5 in the same round in a professional event.

Since working in clubs (primarily as a Caddie and Caddiemaster), I've witnessed 31 aces (not one my own)... some of the highlights:

**** I twice caddied for a player, once the art editor of GOLF magazine, who had a hole in one on the same hole (11th Siwanoy) 2 years apart...The first time the mileage was 163 yards and we debated the club selection intensely before he went with my call of 5 iron...took the perfect hit and roll before the open entrance green and curved in like a putt...Two years later, the hole was playing slightly longer (167) and the pin was a bit further back, but similar...We had always laughed about how we debated the 5 iron, and I said, "Are you really going to hit something else?"... he took the 5 iron and nearly a carbon copy of the first. Those were #15 and #18 in my witness...

*** A crazy bit of symmetry, 3 in one day...11th hole of Rockrimmon...Charity Day shotgun...After the shotgun went out, I had little to do, so just went out for a drive to watch play and bullshit with the members, I come upon (again) the 11th hole par 3 of like 145...two players in one group (Singer and Berkman) both knock it in!!!...About a half hour later...a group of 4 ladies come to the tee...one of them Berkman's wife...yup she knocked it in too... that one made the local papers.

***My first was the craziest though (for me)...1983 .... 3rd hole Sunset Hill GC...110 yard drop shot par 3...high school match...I hit it in the cup on a fly! It bounces out to 25 feet away...my opponent blades a wedge, soaring into the OB long...it rattles in the trees...comes looping backwards onto the green...wait for it...ace...utter devastation.

Just about every one of the other 26 has a good story too...but these were the most amazing.

cheers  vk

I once had a hole in 1 on a par 3, then came back a few years later when the hole had been lengthened to a 420 yard par 4 and holed out for a 2.

The best bit is that I used the very same 6-iron to hole both shots.  Bizarre.

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

I have back to back eagles twice, but both involved par fives.  The first pair involved a 90y hole-out, but all others were putts.

I do have two slam-dunk eagles in my life, both with SW from about 90-95 yards...and they happened on consecutive days  ;D

I have witnessed two holes in one (one of my own), but the other one was my dad winning a car at my home course.  He was tournament chair, playing with his two sons and best friend from HS, and my mom and grandfather were next to the green doing double-your money!  We had about 5 people on property that cared about seeing that, and everyone did!!  Unfortunately I lipped my birdie putt to miss going 1-2-3-4 as a group.

At the time (this was 2005 or so), accepting a car prize was not kosher with amateur status.  My dad being a 10/11 handicapper didn't give a crap about this of course...but I made him go through the reinstatement process so we could still play in the Mass. Father-Son in later years!  As you can imagine, the whole "10-capper as pro" thing was worth a couple years of 19th hole "pro" heckles for my dad...

I have recorded back to back eagles once (3, 2).  Made a 60 foot bomb on a par 5 followed by a hole out wedge to make a deuce.  The next hole I had a tap birdie for a nice string of three holes.

I played a lot of junior golf with a kid that held the world record for shortest time between hole in ones.  He was playing at Idaho State University at the time.  He aced the 7th and 13th holes (or something like that) in the same round.  I believe that record fell some years ago by someone who made 3 aces in a round.

In a two man best ball my team eagled the final two holes of a tournament to come out of nowhere for second place. The emphasis on team considering I didn't hit a single shot.
