McKellar Magazine

I understand that there is a new magazine coming out on golf course architecture and history.  Called McKellar Magazine.  Anyone know anything about it?

Here's its website:

https://www.mckellarmagazine.com/

It describes itself as...
McKellar was conceived by a group of writers – passionate golfers – who believe there is a place in the modern media landscape for a beautifully written,  beautifully illustrated publication celebrating what is great about the sport. In the era where disposable is king, we aim to be collectible, a journal to cherish and share. Place us on your bookshelf next to your favourite novels."

Conceived by GCAs own Tom Dunne and Lawrence Donegan, formerly golf correspondent of the Guardian. First issue has tons of great stuff in it, including a small piece by me  :)

Ships in the next day or so.

Thanks for the link to the website. So now, in a time when I wonder if both Golf Digest and Golf can survive as general-interest magazines devoted to the sport, we have a pair of high-end golf literature publications in The Golfers' Journal and McKellar. Best to both!

This looks pretty hot!   I pre-ordered issue 1 immediately.

I'm hoping the binding is nice and it survives shipping ok, as in not crunched up getting in my mailbox.

Just like the website says, I want a row of these on my golf architecture library shelf.

$7 shipping seems a lot.   Where is this produced?  Anyone know?

It's being printed in Minnesota. The reason the shipping is more than it might otherwise be is that, because they are not 100 per cent sure how frequently it is going to come out, they are not eligible for 'magazine posting' rates, and thus the delivery is more expensive. You should have been a party to the discussion about fulfilment of non-US orders (which were going to be seriously pricey).

Gotta love questioning the $7 shipping, not the $14 magazine!

Full Disclosure:  I have already placed my order.  With the people involved this publication has to be good.

I'm actually in this sort of business and understand the model of subscription driven revenue and not relying on ads, which is crushing the "old" magazine industry.  So $14 makes sense in that regard.

Excited to see it. Coore / Crenshaw associate, Quinn Thompson, is responsible for the beautiful cover artwork. Can't wait till my copy arrives...

Got my copy of the first issue today, and I say it really is epic.

I've been around the block a couple of times with publication design, typesetting/printing, presentation art, etc -- and I think they really did a great job with the finished product.  It's actually book-sized, 6-1/2 x 9-1/2, not magazine-sized.  This means it will fit on the shelf beautifully with other books of standard size rather than having to go on the one bookshelf I have for tall or oversize volumes.  The edge binding is nice and square and will display the issue information very well on the shelf.  It's a high-quality print job on wonderful paper.  The type design and layout is impeccable.  All of this is well worth the $14 plus $7 shipping -- and that's before the content!

Everybody should order these up and support McKellar's effort -- you'll be glad you did.

BTW, they shipped it to me in a mailer and inside, the issue was sandwiched between corrugated cardboard such that it couldn't be crunched or damaged in my mailbox -- kind of like you see photos shipped that say "DO NOT BEND".

It’s great to see publications like TGJ and Mckellar delivering high quality issues that give us another form of golf magazines other than airport kiosk golf issues telling us “crush it 300 yards” on the cover.

Got my issue in on Saturday. Made for a wonderful Saturday night. Great to see a number of high quality publications coming online these days. The stories are well written and quite interesting. With increased competition in this space I found the McKellar model quite refreshing. Feels a bit more like something you’d give to a friends who was starting to have interest in learning more about the history, architecture, and stories of the game. Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

The advertising based magazine model is in tatters, and the internet is full of fake news, leaving real journalists and artists adrift......this model is hopefully the future.....great journalism and art and pictures that is WORTH something.....

Having not seen either of them in person, how do McKeller and TGJ compare? Are there any fundamental differences? Does one stand above the other?

I have heard the first 3 podcasts that Lawrence Donegan has done with Lorne Rubenstein, Mark Canizzaro and Mike Clayton. They are all worth a listen. There is now a 4th podcast with Anthony Pioppi. You can find them all here.

P.S. Just finished listening the podcast #4, the one with Anthony Pioppi. Some VERY interesting stuff there!

Well, for those also curious, I have an answer to my own question. I now subscribe to them both, and ordered the back issues of TGJ. They are both very good, and a huge improvement from the usual drivel, and they both cover slightly different bases. TGJ is a little bigger, a little more high-end, a little more glossy, a little more geared to the average American golfer, and a little fluffier in its writing style. The regular feature where they break down and analyze a notable hole is excellent, as are the pictures.

Despite the names, McKellar is the one that feels more like an industry "journal" full of leading minds writing seriously about the game. At least based on its first issue, I found it to be a more interesting, more engaging read, and to have a more mature, more homespun feel. TGC does an admirable job addressing the issues we tend to care about from a more youthful, more contemporary perspective. McK does the same but from a more learned, more experienced, maybe even more weary perspective. It's also interesting to note how McK almost intentionally eschewed golf porn photography in favor of art and essence.

After listening to podcast #4 yesterday, I went back to re-read the Ian Scott-Taylor threads from 2014 and 2016. Good times.
