Path down the not-so straight and narrow

"Players are not hitting the ball so far today because that’s the way the game is going, they are doing so because the set ups of golf courses do not make them think."

I think he’s largely correct...and I’ve said it here for years.

Using McKenzie’s dictum is wrong but the point is that Tour courses are set up for entertainment (read; birdies) so the reward for control at the expense of distance is reduced...

I watched the Long Drive contest yesterday.
I found the woman's event equally as compelling as the men's.
The men were hitting it 420 ish to win, the women 320ish to win.
You can't see the ball on TV without a Protracer-if the fields were simply inflated with BS yardages(say 620 and 520)-would it be more compelling?
I enjoyed it when Big Cat Williams won it with 307 and 353, don't need to see 425 and a rock hard 65 yard wide grid, 2 degree drivers.
Long is always relative to the competition.

OT-the women in the event had classic swings-the men-not so much

I'm not really sure if courses make players think or not, but I know if I were a Tour player nowadays I wouldn't give a whit about consistency and making cuts. I'd try to go crazy low every round because 1-2 wins and 15 missed cuts beats a bunch of top 40's and you get weekends off to stay fresh.

"Take their focus off the grass and put it squarely on interesting golf." Don Mahaffey

Jeff-I agree.  In addition, your point about winning a couple of times and missing the cut a bunch is spot on.  The money is just too great today.  The old guard took pride in made cuts, top fives, top tens, today's player, not as much.

I enjoy the big ball as much as the next guy, but if baseball was just homeruns or hoops just dunks, their respective games from an integrity standpoint would suffer.

Seems like if any one of these guys could develop a half way decent pitch, chip, and putt game they could do as Jeff says.....have a couple of top 5s and the occasional win when thier "on" and spend the rest of the time sipping mai thai's back at the clubhouse on the weekends...

I just want to meet one 18 handicapper younger than 50 who doesn't hit the ball further than me. Playing golf is like building a community. Test the water before you unhitch the horses and let them drink. You may end up in a Godforsaken place with no way out.

John,

Look no further.....i'm younger than 50 and virtually certain i'm shorter than you off the tee, and with the irons.

But i'm not really a 18, probably closer to as 21 or 22 these days....
