Thanks GCA
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:37:36 AM »
In the wee hours (North America) yesterday, a little crazytown visited GCA if you didn’t see it.
I responded with a... rebuttle.
For the record I thought the original post was valid and on topic.
The follow on comments went sideways.

Ran handled it.
A number of my GCA pals reached out to me with great support.
And it was over. Just like that.

Thanks to all and especially Ran.

I appreciated your response in the prior topic, and wondered why the topic disappeared.
Thank you for this thoughtful follow-up.

I'm actually glad that thread disappeared from the site, just as the response by the poster who appears to also have been taken out of the site.  I was shocked and embarrassed to read that response as it not only has no place on this site, but in any society today. So glad that Ran took care of business and further endeared my confidence that this site is special.

EDIT:
BTW.  I look forward to connecting in Iowa Vaughn!

I assume it was something inappropriate and hateful?

I wondered where the thread went. I have to say that whilst the original topic was well worth discussion for being very serious and yet quite bizarre at the same time I was quite shocked by one particular post which I assume is or was the start of why the thread was deleted and the poster removed. It is good to see such vile attitudes being given the short shrift they deserve.

Wynton Marsalis in the Jazz series talked about the art of ensemble jazz as a negotiation, a conversation -- and he drew the parallel to American life: 'We've  got a problem here, and we're going to have to *deal* with it -- but in order to deal with it we have to have a *conversation*.'

I think that any real conversation only starts when someone honestly speaks *their* truth, their experience -- and not what others may want to hear or are necessaily prepared to hear.

As in jazz, *that's* what makes it beautiful...but that's also what makes it messy.

Glad V feels that this place has his back.

Not highlighting the bad behavior just lets probable racists escape, who was the poster and where does he play his golf?

The response was offensive and inappropriate. The topic was interesting and relevant. It is unfortunate that there are some extremely misguided and rude people in this world. I guess there will always be some.

We need this crime against the community to be highlighted.  How do we know what consequences are appropriate if we don't know the crime?  Mike. T might be on to something though his/her place of golf is probably filled with vile people.  They tend to stick together.

Thanks Corey but it is probably best that Ran squashed it before I got my digital hands fully wrapped around the perp’s throat. It did give me a golf architecture focused idea that I will pose to the group for discussion via a thread. I’m fashioning the question for a post after I finish the day working to keep funding golf!

?????  What was the interesting, relevant topic?  And why can't I judge the severity of the offense myself?  Now I don't even know who the offender was, so if he calls me for a game, I may get stuck with the boor for an entire day.  So much for sunlight being the best disinfectant!  BTW, I get offended quite often here with attacks on my flavor of gca, my favorite architects, and the size of my "lazy" ass (and I am a walker!).  Just what's wrong with being offended a bit?  Geez.

I didn't see it, and everyone in this thread's lips are sealed. But I suspect I can guess what happened...

A certain occasional GCA poster has a long history of posting barely-concealed racism on this site. He otherwise posts rarely, if at all. I notice now that his account is deactivated.

I also notice the disappearance of the thread about Grandview Golf Course in Pennsylvania calling the police because a fivesome of African American women allegedly played a slow front nine.

When that thread and the thread about Beverly's new honorary member appeared earlier this week, I just figured we'd soon enough get another racist post from... well, I should probably use a code name in case I'm wrong. Let's call him Danny "Four Balls" Noonan. Ol' Four Balls was nothing if not predictable, and rarely could allow a thread that acknowledges the existence of nonwhite people to pass by without giving his bitter two cents. I'm guessing he came in guns-blazing and finally got booted?

My wife figured out the thread immediately even though she is not on GCA.

Ran does an exemplary job of managing this place even though he has a day job so I trust him to make the decisions he does about what he discloses and what he does not regarding those decisions.

In addition to the post-in-question being ignorant and painfully stupid (at best), it’s ironic that “Ol’ Four Balls” was bitching about rules not applying to certain members of our society...yet he thought it unfair a course wouldn’t allow him to hit his own golf balls on the range to warm up before a round.

Drifting way off thread here, but many years ago, Jim Colbert was playing a round at the old Kansas City CC. No range, so he hit one warm up ball of his first tee (think it was actually 10) then proceeded to shoot a course record 61.  They never gave him the record because of his practice shot.  Rules are rules for everyone.

Back slightly closer to topic, until it was explained in a post above, I found myself self absorbed and wondering, "Was it really more vicious than the Merion threads?" ;)

IMO, this site would be much more successful if instead of engaging in backroom communications/gossip circles, we would dialogue openly, in our proper name, and in the same manner we would face-to-face.

I have no idea what the censored thread was about nor the offending remarks, but if we can't see for ourselves, maybe this thread and all the speculation and possible false attributions should be likewise pulled.

It was a negative racial stereotype by a 'former' full member who I believe had over 800 posts IIRC.  I won't say anymore than that, but pulling the thread and the member was the right move without question, if it hadn't been dealt with as seriously as it did I would have been disappointed at the very least.  Forget about the poster as he is gone and just a reminder that you can still be shocked by ignorance when you least expect it.
