The headline says it all. Although reading the story, the closure comes despite the current operational successes.

These quotes are interesting:

Quote
“With COVID last year, we had a very good year,” Griffin said. “This being one of the most affordable golf courses in the area, business has been good. It’s hard to walk away from a successful business, but sometimes you’re ready.”

Griffin said selling to another operator who could keep the course going would not be a viable option, though he noted that the deal with Godsey is not yet finalized.

“I don’t know that we could sell it as a golf course, because they really couldn’t pay us what we’d have to get for it,” he said. “Golf courses are being sold daily for a fraction of what they were built for.”

Although the transition to homes is not certain:

Quote
“We don’t know this will happen. It’s an option,” Griffin said of Godsey’s proposal. “We’ve had offers on this golf course before. The zoning has been an issue in the past, and it may be this time. We don’t know. It’s far from a done deal.”

To me, the course is fun to play. Although short and compact on just 120 acres, there is an appreciable amount of variety in the shots required mostly through Findlay's excellent use of the relief provided by the topography.

It is a very good, affordable option in the Richmond area.   A few years back I played there on New Year's Day in the first group out at sunrise and really enjoyed it.   Sad to see those kind of places fall away after nearly 100 years of existence.

Update:

The County has approved the plan to convert the course to houses. The course will cease operations after Summer 2022.

[The link appears to work in the preview despite the very small text size. Can anyone advise how to avoid such?]
