Which courses have the best collection of UPHILL holes?
« on: April 19, 2018, 09:34:26 PM »
Uphill holes can be difficult to do well - which courses do you think have a strong collections of uphill holes (or at least uphill shots)?

Pasatiempo is one that comes quickly to my mind in this regard.

For bonus points, what aspects of these collections of uphill holes make them good/great in your opinion?

Olympic Lake has around five, according to my memory from the 1992 and 1993 Tour Championships.  2, 4, 7, 11, and 17.  All seemed like real good holes to me.  2nd shot on 18 was also uphill IIRC (another real good hole IMO).

Flynn loves the hills.  Rolling Green has the same number as LCC.
1 gradual
4 steep
6 minor
8 dramatic
9 relentless
10 gradual
11 steep
12 shelf
14 severe drop off on the right
15 dramatic
17 subtle
18 steady

Some of the green surface is visible from the landing area on all but 15

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Hope Valley:

4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18.  Different lengths including two Par 3s.  Number 6 has some elements of a Ross Volcano hole, and 18 tough Par 3 to navigate when bets are close, especially with people sitting on hill overlooking the green.  Also, greens sizes and shapes vary as do which side of fairway provides best angle.  False fronts on several mean both need to carry all the way to surface, but over the back can lead to a very difficult chip/pitch.

Praire Dunes has the best set of four uphill par 3's on the planet. Most likely the only set of par 3's that are all uphill on the planet.

Is this best set or most? There’s a big difference.

I know a couple of courses that feel like they are entirely uphill because the downhill is used up all in 2 or 3 steep descents with drop-shots.

Very detrimental to the courses in question - both are a slog.

Wee Burn's 9th and 18th are very good uphill holes.

The approach to Yale #10 puts Yale at the top of the list single-handedly.  (That's not even to mention the approaches to 7 and 12, the drive on 17, and the second shot at 18....)

While not the greatest selection of uphill holes, there are certainly a few that standout at Montclair Golf Club. 4 of 1, 8 of 2, 6 of 3, 4 of 4, and 6 of 4 come to mind.

Certainly won't win for best...but Lake Chabot has more downhill and uphill shots than you can shake a stick at...

Is #10 really uphill ?  If so, man, it has been too long since I've been there.

I'll have to disagree with this take, pretty strongly at that.

You mean 17 and 18 aren't an epic end to the Masters?  ;D ;D

Jonathan, yes (and include #1 as well?), but what is striking to me is that it didn't ever feel that way. I mean, yes, your post jogged my memory and those shots are indeed uphill....but somehow everything seems so integrated there, so 'right', that those shots didn't jump out at me as uphill or downhill, but as 'just the way they are'...if you know what I mean.

How about Capilano in Vancouver?  Another course that has a steep descent where the returning climb never feels that bad.  Holes 9 and 10 are my favorite uphillers there, but 13 and 18 were also pretty good.  It doesn't seem like much of a mystery that the trick to good courses on hilly land is to have the climbs happen in holes, rather than between holes.

While I doubt Jack would break his crown I think the pics above show the 10th is uphill. It's really the least of your concerns as the lunch crowd braces for another fail.

But only The Bridge can say they have 3 of 4 uphill when previously all 4 were downhill!
and one of the ones that was downhill and now uphill, is a far easier walk

The C@C course at Sand Valley has some nice uphill holes.  Straight uphill on #'s 2,4, 8, 11, 13, 16, and 18.  Plus a number of holes play downhill of the tee and uphill to the green such as #1 and 9.  And finally the 7th which is uphill tee shot to a semi blind second which is played into a valley and the 3rd is played back uphill again.

Pine Valley also should get a vote for uphill holes #2, 5, 15, 17 and 18.

Lawsonia Links #1, 2, 4, 8 (gradually uphill), 9, 10, 13, and 15

All of the mentioned uphill at these two courses trump most of the uphill holes at ANGC.

Its hard for me to think in terms of "collection of uphill holes" because collection really isn't the right word. In any case, I think I would go with a course which demands uphill holes and they are eased into the routing. As in the house is lower than much of the course.  Its a difficult thing to pull off several uphill holes without giving the overall impression of a slog.  So many links holes end up being height nuetral because they often start a bit high and finish high...so the elevation change can often not be much to speak of.

Off the top of my head, I am struggling to think of a course with more really good uphill holes than Cavendish.  The 5th is a bruiser and somewaht similar to what is often the normal uphill hole.  The 8th is a cracker with a cool green.  13 is a superb par 3 and 14 is wonderful par 5.

Thinking a little bit on a links..what about Littlestone?  4 is a good hole then we get 16 & 17.  No slogs involved and yet the uphill nature of the holes is felt.

Notts also a good example of uphill holes.  4, 10, 11, 15, 16 & 17.  Really...this is the best of the ones I listed, but it is a bit of a bruiser course.

My favorite is Painswick, whose first 5 holes are all uphill and include an unreachable 224 yard par 4, followed by a 330 yard hiles requiring a drive and a 7-iron, followed by a nearly driveable 285 yarder with a green cut into the side of the sloping fairway, then a drive and an 8 iron to a lovely green surrounded by trees 294 from the tees, then a 9-iron over walls of a Bronze Age hill fort.  Phew!

After that you get to play 6 lovely holes surrounding the hill fort, and then 7 holes that bring you downhill all the way to the clubhouse, starting with a 250 yard 6 iron and several reachable par 4's including one (the 17th) which requires a long carry over the local cemetery.

Magic.

Might not be the best but Yale certainly has some fun ones.  10, 17 tee shot, the roller coaster on 18 are great holes.
